Adapter???

So I went looking for head units AGAIN today, still trying to figure out exactly what I want. Im leaning towards the Alpine 9813. Still not sure tho. Anyways, I was thinking about how I was going to go about mounting a DIN CD player in the gapping whole that the stock radio would leave in my dash, so I asked the guy about their mounting adapters. He showed me this gawd awful ugly pice of plastic with a friggin pocket on top of where the radio goes. I refuse to put a $350 head unit into a $14,000 car with that cheap-a$$ piece of plastic. What are my other options?? What did anyone else do?? PICTURES PLEASE!!

RE: Adapter???

best bet is a custom install by a stereo place. not a best buy or somethin cheap but a good small place. there are a few places around here in mass that will do it. Ive been quoted at 300 for my sony in my 1997. dude showed me some pics, he extends the wood grain down or can leave it black, either way looks awesome.

RE: Adapter???

cool, thanks, I guess Ill have to start looking around. I have a few places that I know of, i guess I should ask them too.

RE: Adapter???

yeah man, it looks awesome. i was gonna put my sony in, still might, but i kinda like how everything matches, same color lights and all.

Paul-

Would you recomend using an equalizer?? Im not sure exactly how they hook up, but will I be able to reatin my three pre-outs? Is it an Alpine equalizer?? Again, I know nothing about these, just wondering!

RE: Adapter???

its a really old coustic eq that does the trick. 7 bands and sub gain control. i like the flexibility of an eq but alot of people like to say its just one more thing to mess up the signal. alot of alpine decks have 3/5/7 band eqs built into them, it just depends on how much money u feel like dropping. i dont like only adjusting bass/treble, i like being able to adjust individual frequencies to tune my setup. once i land this job, this eq will be gone for either a better quality in-dash or a 30 band that i have yet to figure out where it will go.

RE: Adapter???

Paul, that instal is very sharp. Unfortuantly my car has only a single DIN unit, so I'm putting one where the rear defrost/cigar lighter was. I'm moving the rear defrost to the armrest pocket thingie. (and possibly the gas and trunk popper depending on how crazy I get with the doors panels)

EQ's are great if you know how to use them. Modern high quality EQ's are so clean that you will not notice any added distortion. Many come with 3 pairs of preouts, and you usually only need one set in inputs from the CD player (saving you money on having to buy a CD player that has 3 instead of 2 or even 1)

If you just want to tweek a little, audiocontrol makes some great 3 and 4 band EQ's. If you want the ultimate, zapco makes a dual 30 band EQ (30 bands for each side!!) that fits in dash (however I *think* it uses zapco's symballink system whichg would require zapco amps)

Alpine and Pioneer also make well priced indash EQ's.

RE: Adapter???

that zapco piece sounds very interesting. the point that youre talking about putting your eq i was considering putting my switches for the kale mod there. it'd be a 2 switch setup (front/back) and id have the switches where the defrost and traction buttons are. id also remove the lighter and put a dual needle guage in its place.
