amp for subs

I have 2 12" subs (MB Quart PWD 304) and I'm looking for an amp to power them (I believe they are 400 watts rms, 4 ohm dvc).

-I'm looking to spend right around $400, maybe a little more if need be.
-The subs will be in a sealed box (which is yet to be designed)
-I listen to rock mostly, so I'm looking more for tight bass, compared to loudness (which probably has more to do with the box than amp, but just thought I would throw it in there.)
-a remote bass control knob would be great, but not neccessary

btw: are the subs any good? I got them for a pretty good price, and I haven't really heard anything bad about them. I realize they probably aren't that great for SPL, but I'm ok with that as long as they sound good.

Thanks for the input :)

RE: amp for subs

how many ohms are the subs? if theyre dual 4 ohms, then the ppi pcx 2200 would be good for u. solid amp and when bridged to 4 ohms mono can produce 800 clean watts. someone correct me if im wrong about anything ohm related since my brain just cant learn this concept.

the ppi pcx 2200 can be had online for around $400 and closer to $300 on ebay. i have one powering my sub and can run it all day long without any problems pushing 800 watts. id recommend adding a fan since these amps do heat up a bit. if its the only amp or is accompanied by smaller amp, i dont think youd have to worry about fans. theyre more a precautionary type thing.

RE: amp for subs

the Kicker 600.1 won't work since it puts out max power at 2 ohms, and with 2 4 ohm DVC's you'll need a 1 ohm stable amp for max power. The kicker 1200.1 would work, but a bit over your budget. (around $430 plus shipping on ebay.)

You can use a Kicker 800.2, each channel will give you 400 watts. They can be had for around $325, and come with a remote bass knob. On my website you can see where I put mine, I never use the ashtray anyways. :)

The PPI's are clean amps, but as Paul said, the can get very hot, much like the kickers of old. Many newer amps (kicker included) come with built in fans.

I have never heard those subs, nor heard much about them. You can email them for box specs. I would say for tight bass, a smaller sealed box would work best. Give each subs it's own enclosure (i.e. do't make one huge box, but split it in the middle) maybe around 1 to 1.5 cubes each. But thats just a guess, the manufactorer will have the best numbers.

RE: amp for subs

ive heard nothing but great things about those subs. theyre predominantly for SQ applications but can pound pretty well, too.

btw, the ppi's have built in fans but dont really do much. but like i said, if theres not too much on the electrical system, it should be fine.

RE: amp for subs

Thanks for the input everyone. I will probably end up going with the Kicker KX1200.1 (although I'm still up for ideas.) I'll just have to wait a little longer to save up the cash, that's all.

DJ: I think I will end up placing the bass knob in the ashtray also. What I REALLY want to do though, is use the cigarette lighter as the bass knob. I saw it somewhere (maybe it was a fellow LODer) and I think that would be the coolest way to do it.

RE: amp for subs

I beleive it was mike (phatz) who did that. He's been around a lot recently, I'm sure he'd love to help you. It doesn't seem that hard to do in theory, esp. with the shape of the Kicker bass knobs. I just never got a round to it, and now that space is going to be used by an Equilizer.
