Blue Flame brings it home again!

This past weekend I attended the annual SuperCoupe Shootout in Xenia, OH for a weekend of my favorite activities which of course included a day of drag racing!

I entered the '93 in the brackets race while the SuperCoupes fought it out in their index classes. There were a couple other Lincolns in attendance. One was a '94 that ran in the brackets and another was a N/A Gen2 with a forged motor running low 13s in one of the modded index classes!

The weather was less than optimum and threatened rain all day but only produced humidity and gloomy skies with a chilly headwind.

The Blue Flame seemed to not run quite as well as expected but proved consistent enough to feel confident with a 13.65 dial as the eliminations began. After breaking out in the 1st round, we lowered the dial to a 13.6 and rode it to the finals against a Chrysler 300C that was literally the only non-Ford at the event.

The final round was somewhat exciting. When the tree came down, I launched the car hard and found myself fighting for traction as it was literally fish tailing away from the tree. It no sooner seemed to regain traction when the 1-2 shift hit hard and the rear broke loose again as I worked to maintain control. Then again on the 2-3 shift it broke loose and wiggled it's way down the far end of the track as I chased the Chrysler to the stripes. I didn't think I had made it when all of the sudden I noticed the win light in my lane!

I nursed the brakes and rode the track all the way to the end and gently turned onto the return road knowing something was not right with the car. After picking up the timeslip showing I was victorious since the Chrysler had broken out, I immediately headed to the pits to examine what the problem was. As I exited the car I didn't have to look far as the drivers side drag tire was nearly flat!

Apparently, I had spun the wheel and tube combination as air was leaking around the twisted valve stem. I guess those 1.79-1.82 sixty foot times were a bit hard on the rear tires. :D

But I overcame adversity and picked up the second bracket win of the 2010 season! :)

Hi five man!! The only trophy I ever got for first place was a beer mug! Congrats!

Congratulations, JP! That is great! :) Sorry to hear about your tube getting messed up. Glad you were able to keep it going straight with the flat. Did your valve stem clamp come loose and spin the tube, or more of a pulling type of tear? Time for bead locks?

Nice to see you there JP, I envy those 60 foot times of yours! I was also delighted with how well my 98 LSC ran. Thanks for mentioning it! I have the bug again and I am going to get a dyno-tune this Friday after a finish an install of a 120HP dry nitrous system. I am shooting for the quickest nitrous title now. I checked all my timeslips from the weekend and you got me beat on N/A! I know what your going to say about sissy power adders, but my car is on the edge of streetable anyway with that killer Dirty Dog converter, so why not!

Bob, your car is a true sleeper. For a Gen2 with a stock intake running naturally aspirated, no one would see you coming! That car will be wicked fast with your compression and a big shot of nitrous!

I hope to find out on Saturday if all goes well with the Friday dyno tune! I think a track in nearby Cincinnati (Tri-State) has a test and tune day.

Thanks for all the support! :)

Mike, I haven't had the tire dismounted yet, but I suspect it was a tear of the tube. It was leaking pretty bad around the valve stem and the stem was crooked in the wheel. By the time I got to the pits, I had to put air in it to put it on the trailer. The disappointing part was it prevented me from running in the final run offs between the class winners. :(

I hope to find out on Saturday if all goes well with the Friday dyno tune! I think a track in nearby Cincinnati (Tri-State) has a test and tune day.

Cool! Be sure to let us know how you do! :)

What do you consider a true sleeper 1/4 mile time for a Gen2 with a stock intake and basic driveline and exhaust mods? :D

Mid 13s or lower?

If you look at the Quickest Lincolns of Distinction list, the 13s are predominantly Gen1s. One Gen2 at 13.9 and a handful in low 14s. Both you and Bob need to post up... Hint, hint.

No offense, but you just don't see a mid to low 13 second naturally aspirated Gen2. Of course not that many Gen1s either but the difference is unmistakable. But he does have a forged bottom end and a high compression built motor. The Blue Flame is still running a stock bottom end (and likely is low on compression - LOL).

John! I am shooting for a high 13 on the "Silver Flame" with basic driveline mods and NOTHING done under the hood. The revised tune is back on Friday. Wish me luck on Saturday! :D And FWIW, I believe that at this point, a Cobra Intake or even Gen1 intake would put me in the 13s right away. :D Trust me, I can feel it choking up top. ;)

Congrats JP!
now you know why us drag slick racers use wheel screws!
Not everyone does, but when the tire sticks to a well-prepped track and the wheel rotates on a hard-driving chassis, you can end up with bead movement and an eventual flat tire.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-G1496/

you can use regular self-tapping screws from a hardware store as well. some racers use 4 per bead, some use 8. I've seen all kinds. Just be sure if you do this, you don't make the wheel hole too big. the screw MUST thread in to the wheel hole to serve any purpose by locking the bead to the wheel to prevent any movement.
balance the tire/wheel combo AFTER installing wheel screws.
make sure tire has a minimum of 25 psi in it to prevent the bead from pushing away from the wheel when screws are installed. check for leaks.

congrats on the win...now figure out a way to either not hook up as well, or get some drag race wheels that you can drill and screw in bead screws. That's what they are there for!

Nice looking trophy. you know, some racers spend their whole adult life chasing that elusive WIN. Not many can say they've done it twice.

good for you!

Good luck on your upcoming race day!

FWIW, I don't recall a Gen2 running a Gen1 intake, but when I put my modified Gen1 intake in I felt a huge improvement above 4500 rpms!

Congrats JP!...

Thanks Craig!
