Bobby Underwood's 158mph street car

VIII looking for 8s
I hope this is the right spot for this post. I couldn't resist the urge to share. Everybody buckle up. This is one of the coolest things that you might have seen in a long time.

Attention was brought to this car on the Mark VIII Community Facebook page a couple years ago when there was word that there was a Coyote Lincoln that had came into existence, and from what I know, the first. Originally a C-head swap car, Bobby decided that he wanted to get a little taste of this new technology that came about with the production of the Coyote 5.0 32-valve modular engine. He was originally on a junkyard truck motor with a 200 shot of nitrous. The car ran 12.50s on the motor with 4.10s and a tune on open converter and 10.7s on the shot. He later progressed to a twin turbo setup still on the 4r70w but was encountering tranny issues and breaking points in the IRS.This was the last setup that he had last year and his best pass was a 9.50 on a hurt motor.

Over this last winter with a hurt motor, IRS not holding up, and a tranny that was nothing more than a ticking time bomb he decided it was time for a complete do over. Having been in the #2 spot last year on Houston's Top 10 DOT list in the street car division he fell to spot #5. Over this winter he backhalfed the car and went to pro level stuff on a straight axle setup. Since the motor was hurt and 9.50s weren't good enough for him, he decided it was time to forge the Coyote. So he did a full engine build and decided to ditch the 4r70w for a TH400 transmission. The two 62mm turbos came out and he decided to do a mild fronthalf on the car for safety reasons and fit an 87mm promod turbo in the nose right behind the grille. All of this in a vicious attempt to take back his spot and run down the top contender in the division to take #1 in the street division. Yes, you heard me right.

With all of that said, the car is now done and he started dialing it in last Friday at Royal Purple Raceway. After making a few passes he took it home on the trailer and looked everything over to see if it survived it's first "spirited driving" in a straight line. Everything checked out good. The next day he hit up San Antonio Raceway and made a couple passes. Here is the lengthy video of the live feed at SAR to see this spectacular build in action. Your points of interest will be 14:45 in and 1 hour and 2 minutes in.

Some things to note here in seeing his comments over on Facebook regarding the launch and other technical pieces of information. The car is dialed way back on the boost right now at the starting line and is leaving on practically no boost. Someone had asked him including myself about the soft launches and he said at this point he is just wanting to make sure the car is tracking straight, and good news it did. Straight as an arrow. He went on further to say that he is actually now legitimately scared to launch the car hard because he needs to build up some courage to make a full pass. He said when it hits second gear it is downright scary. The car has ladder bars out back. With all that said, the car pulled a trap speed of 158 mph launching soft with a lousy yet intentional 1.68 short time. This makes it an 8.60 car full pass. He was pulling 4psi launches and wants to try 6 at least next time around. The turbo setup that he has is capable of 14 psi. Once he gets a full pass in it will be dropping the laundry.

In ending, I would just like to say big props to Bobby Underwood and this mean machine. I would have never expected anything like this to come out of the Mark VIII community. May 8th is the big day to try to grab spot #1 in the Top 10 street division. Save it on your calendars guys, or if you are on social media I'm sure there will be a stir. I expect he will be getting plenty of seat time in the car before then to muster up some courage to make a real full pass in this thing. Let's hope it stays together this time. Sometimes it's nice to have a unicorn. This is history in the making and appears to be the quickest street car Mark VIII we have ever seen. I present to you "Black Mamba"

Pics to follow....
