Coil on plug vs. coil packs ???

After spending some time with this 2nd gen I bought, I'm am more and more convinced why I liked the 1st gen cars sooo much. Here is a pic of a coil boot I pulled from this car; 7 out of 8 look the same. Don't tell me this is normal ???

Obviously, I am going to replace the whole set, at $3.20 a piece it's no brainer, but one question: do you guys replace the contact springs as well ? do the new boots come with them ?

RE: Coil on plug vs. coil packs ???

What amazes me is that this car is sooo full of $5 parts that brake so often. Your car is either a factory freak, or they've been replaced before you bought it. We both know it how common it is to see them cracked, but I literally pulled them out in pieces. I think the plugs were original too

BTW the $3.20 is from rockauto.com but
I am not sure if they also come with springs.
FPN and other discounted sources $6.50 a piece.

RE: Coil on plug vs. coil packs ???

My wifes car had a miss, so I pulled the plugs. There was barely any electrode left, i think they were originals (97 with 92k miles now). About half of the boots were cracked.

RE: Coil on plug vs. coil packs ???

In this case, we are probably our own worst enemy. How many actually have a removal tool for the boots? We (me included) attempt to pull them from the top and after 70-80-90k miles, that rubber is pretty well cooked, so it's brittle. Then if we DO suceed to remove the boot intact, we don't grease it when we put it back on....that's a cracked/broken boot waiting to happen guys. Don't blame the car...it's us!!

I always use dielectric grease when puting them back on. Tell people all the time to use it, but like Bud said most don't.

RE: Coil on plug vs. coil packs ???

I had two coils fail before there was any damage to any of the boots. Twice i got a miss, and when i checked it out, i narrowed it down to the coils. Yet the boots were intact, even when inspected closely. The second time i just replaced all the coils and haven't had a problem since.

I should have 6 good coils around somewhere.

RE: Coil on plug vs. coil packs ???

Well, I taped up the boots, and it's idles perfect. So the coils are fine. Dave, thanx for the offer though. I ordered new boots already, $25 for the complete set. So dielectric grease on the boots and it should be fine ?
I hope to get this car on the road this week. Stock for now ...

RE: Coil on plug vs. coil packs ???

Should be fine.

You're going to want an intake and a tune ASAP.

RE: Coil on plug vs. coil packs ???

To be honest I don't know what to do. I can either keep both of them, sell the 95, or part it out. If I sell it, I don't know if I should bring it back to semi-stock form, or try to sell it with all the stuff on there. In parts it's easy $4500, even more if I strip it completely. If I get $3500 as it sits right now, I would get the 04 motor asap.

RE: Coil on plug vs. coil packs ???

Swap gears and driveshaft. Then sell it outright. Clean it up really nice, take the boost gauge out, and put it up for sale. You should be able to get some decent money for it. I got $3500 out of my stock '94 with 154k on it when i sold it a few years back.

LMAOOOO :D :D :D

Yeah, gears, driveshaft, intake, and chip, maybe swap HIDs with someone who wants and needs them.

You still have the stock driveshaft ? I wouldn't have to pull it out from the 97 for now ....

RE: Coil on plug vs. coil packs ???

sure do.

probably have an iron pumpkin with some kind of gears in it also.

RE: Coil on plug vs. coil packs ???

I bought it couple weeks ago. The 95 is still here. I am still hesitant to sell it, I got used to it so much. But with the plans I have the hood clearance and EEC V computer on the 2nd gen will make things a lot easier.

Put an 04 motor with a sheet metal intake and T76. Bye bye power problems.
[/div]

you mean 04 cobra motor, right?
