FOCAL

Does anyone have any experience with Focal speakers, specifically the subs?? I heard a pair of 11" Focals today that were hitting deep but still kept their punch attitude that I need to have in a sub. I was thinking about three of them in a tuned (professionally) ported box.

On the same note, what would be a decent amp to drive these things?? Its would be wired up for a 1.333 ohm load. Im looking for something that is stable to 1 ohm and will deliver ~1500 Watts max. I was thinking about the Kicker 1200.1?

RE: FOCAL

never heard of focal but if they got what ya like go for it. that would be a decent amp too. id like to get some JL W6v2s....and a nice fat JL amp...... also worry more about RMS than max power. id say leave about 100-150 watts before max so you dont blow them.

RE: FOCAL

FoCAL subs are pure SQ subs, they will get low and sound incredicle, but won't win many SPL comps.

The Kicker amp will work fine, just keep an eye on your gains and when you hear them stressing, turn them down. At 1.33 ohms, the kicker should put out around 1000-1200 actual watts.

I don't think there would be enough room to have 3 Ported subs in our trunks. Sealed yes, ported, it's debatable...depends on the box size FoCAL asks for.

RE: FOCAL

Yup, SPL= Sound pressure Levels, SQL= a system that sounds great but can get REALLY LOUD, which happens to be my goal.

RE: FOCAL

Yeah, SPL isnt really a big deal to me. I want it to sound great nad I want the punch and the tightness, but I want it to feel like im getting hit in the back of the head with the sound.

Max Power Per speaker is 500w RMS is 250-300w. I just didint want anyone to assume that I needed something crazy like 3000w when I said 3 speakers, beacuse as far as speakers go, 500 watts max doesnt seem like that much, seeing that I was looking at speakers in the same range that had an RMS of 500w, but I really dont know...

Would you mind me asking what you are using??

According to the Focal Website, they require between 25 and 40 liters in a Bass Reflex box. (Bass Reflex??? Anyone?) Well just going with the larger end for a ported box, 40 liters = 1.4 cubic feet. And just with some rough calcualtions, it sounds like that would fit very nicely right between the fender wells. Not straight accross but more of a three faced design. Im going to work on a little rendering of the trunk tonight and if I get around to it I will post what I come up with.

RE: FOCAL

Which line is it you are looking at, the ployglass, polykevlar, or utopia series?

Right now most of my system is very modest, due to very limited funds (kids and wives like to suck the wallet dry, lol) The speakers are the Rainbow pro 3 ways, which are close to being some of the best speakers on the market (they retail for around $1000) The amp is a kicker 800.4, which also power a kicker L7 in a 1.5 cube sealed enclosure. The solo is getting 500 watts, and the pros are getting 125 watts per side, but each companant is begging for more. If money cooperates this summer I will triamp the pros using Zapco C2k amps, and I will be adding more subs. I'll probably stick with kicker subs, simply because they've never done me wrong, and Kicker customer service is great. I may stop at two subs, or stick a thrid in there. If my wife would let me, I had a diagram fitting 7 subs all in the trunk easliy, and still having a little room for other stuff. But she wants to save room for strollers (woman, sheesh)

RE: FOCAL

as dj said earlier, focals subs sound amazing. id say if youre going with a high quality speaker, u might as well send it a high quality signal. if youre going all out dont skimp out on the amp. go check out www.usamps.com for some great amps that are all 1 ohm stable. i dont know if id recommend slapping 500 to each sub but im not too familiar with focal subs as far as if theyre under, over, or rated right where they need to be.

RE: FOCAL

I was trying to get them 300w each, ill check out that link tho. I was going to go with alpine amps, but none of them are stable with that load. Its a personal thing...

And while you are recomending ( :) ) which amp would you recomend that I get?? Im really not too sure what Im looking at there...

RE: FOCAL

the links not working for me right now but u can email them for their recommendations. let them know what youve got and what you want and im sure theyll be able to give u all the info u need.

RE: FOCAL

I would not recomend USAMPS to power subs for the average user. The reason USAMPS are so clean is because they are class AB, and they will be a huge strain on a stock electrical system. Unless you plan on upgrading your electrical, stick with class D or class T.

Paul did you ever see the fuse size for the 6000x? 900 freakin amps!!!! That is a bada** amp though, prolly puts out 10,000 watts at 18 volts....
