I am trying to clean the oxidation off of my headlight lenses to save myself some money to pay someone to do. I have all the right tools but have no idea on how to take them off. I noticed from the outside view, they have one visible screw and if you take that off, it seems not to do much but I know it is obviously needed. Anyone have some ideas? besides buying a car manual. I have a 98 lincoln Mark V111.

Easy way to clean those foggy lenses. I have a '97 and it worked VERY well for me:

Buy a small bottle (plastic container) of Meguiar's Mirror Glaze #17. It's clear plastic cleaner. I used a Auto-Pac Disc Pad on the end of an electric drill (veri-speed). Attach a soft polishing pad to it and apply the Polish to the pad. Don't spare the fluid. Run drill at a very slow speed and keep polishing the lens. DO NOT LET THE PAD RUN DRY! You'll burn the plastic. Keep polishing until you think it's clear, remove the wet pad and by hand, after the polish drys, use a clean polishing cloth and wipe/polish the lens. I did both mine in a 1/2 hour or so...many less. That was almost two summers ago. Still in great shape. Mine were so foggy, I couldn't see well at night with the lights. I also use auto polish on them every time I wax the car, keeps them sparklin'.

budpytko, did you do this to the inside of the lens? I see the OP suggested the haze was on the inside, as mine seems to be, I tried the method suggested to me that is similar to what you said and it didn't change anything. I t think the oxidation is on the inside, how can that be handled?

Well...inorder to get the lenses off the housings, it takes some patience and trust.

DO THIS ON YOUR OWN CAUTION!!!* You need to "melt" them in your oven in the house. Sounds crazy but if you turn up the heat to 375, let it heat up and then once ready SHUT OFF the oven, let the light sit in there for 10 minutes. Be careful pulling it out, and use a flat edged item that you can start to pry the lense off. Sounds crazy but thats how I took off my gen 1 lenses to do my projector conversion. Just be VERY careful cause you can ruin a housing easily. If the 375 does not work, let the light cool off completely and slow increase the heat, I would NOT go over 400. *DO THIS ON YOUR OWN CAUTION!!!

He has a Gen TWO, not a Gen ONE.

Mike, rub harder!! I've never seen a Gen II with the haze on the INSIDE! Are you using a motorized devise to help you? Prob won't work by hand unlesss you really want to work. DO NOT USE SANDPAPER!!! That only scratches it more!

I dont know if you have any Sams Club's close to you but the ones around here now offer headlight restoration services in the auto section. My lens on the '98 were really messed up and foggy, I didn't think they could be helped but after 2 hours those guys had them looking like brand new!. Only cost $39.99 for the service and worth every penny.
