Joseph Cotten's Lincoln...

In the 1956 movie "Bottom of the Bottle", Joseph Cotten drove what looked to be a '54 Lincoln convertible with a set of tail lights that looked similar to those of a '55 Cadillac. Does anyone know if the car came that way from the factory or if it was a customized car?

RE: Joseph Cotten's Lincoln...

I haven't seen the film so I'm just going by your description. That said, my book shows no fins on any ford product of that year. The Cadillac I believe you are referring to had the taillights in a rather abrubt fin.
Unless my ford book is wrong the car in question must have been modified.
Now I have to go see the movie, thanks.

RE: Joseph Cotten's Lincoln...

I hope you do get to see it. The car appears in the opening scenes sufficiently to establish that it is clearly a Lincoln. Even the dashboard gives it away. But those taillights were either a very special limited edition of somebody did some custom work that was restricted to the taillight treatment.

I found the movie on the Turner Classic Movie channel where they have replayed at least once since I first caught sight of it. I had hoped that the trivia section of the IMDB listing for the film might make mention of it--a user did comment on the appearance of a 300SL Gullwing in the movie--but, alas.

RE: Joseph Cotten's Lincoln...

Yes, Cotten's Lincoln looked liked this car--apart from the fact of being a convertible--except that the car pictured above shows a standard taillight treatment that is vertically positioned. Cotten's car had taillights that seemed to be integrated horizontally along the top of the fender with the red plastic lens peaking upwards similar to, but smaller than, those of a '55 Cadilac.

When I first saw the movie and described it to a friend, he thought it might be a Hudson, but a subsequent viewing confirmed it is a Lincoln, though one that, I suppose, has been discreetly modified.
