Lincoln Markaro

Hello, I recently purchased the 1993 Lincoln Mark VIII Markaro featured in the Other Tech page: Markaro - 1993 Mark VIII Pickup Truck Conversion
I found the Markaro at A-1 Auto Sales in Conroe Texas and had it trucked home to Richmond California. While in cosmetically pretty good shape, the Markaro was in need of some deferred maintenance. New water pump and thermostat, rear CV-joint axles, rear brake rotors, muffler, fuel and air filters, climate control module, radio, several window switches and one window motor, windshield wipers, repaired water-filled passenger headlight and sourced a missing spare tire and jack.

The Markaro is a constant source of entertainment: not a day goes by without someone asking if it's a production car or a request to take its picture. The Lincoln pick-up is also useful as I've hauled cardboard to the recycler, where two separate folks asked if they could take its picture and a trip to Home Depot.

The Markaro is popular not just with car nerds but folks who like the "emerald mist" paint or the sporty look of the shortened roofline.

Nice! It's a rare car, do you know how many were made? I get the same questions about my convertible. Any photos?

Congratulations on finding and acquiring this one of a kind Lincoln!

Just curious, do you have other Mark VIII's or perhaps had previous ones? How did you exactly find the Markaro? By happenstance?

Welcome to the Lincolns of Distinction! :)

I'm trying to post recent pictures of the Markaro.

The Lincoln is a revelation to me; subtle performance wrapped in early '90's luxury. I've pretty eclectic tastes when it comes to cars. The rest of my fleet consists of a '63 Studebaker Avanti R2, a '68 Meyer Manx SR, another one-of-a-kind THE Harry Bradley Corvette Station Wagon, an '85 ASC McLaren Capri convertible and a '92 Lotus Elan m100. I've owned many, many more interesting cars, always drawn to unique vehicles with interesting histories.

Peter, you may have trouble posting pics if they are not hosted somewhere online where you can link to them.

For the benefit of others, here are the pics you sent in your email...

Nice Markaro, the Deep Jewel Green color too! I really like the Avanti too!

Welcome!

I'm so pleased to see this car in good hands. I came very close to bidding on it myself when I saw it come up for auction, but lacked the spousal stamp of approval. Enjoy the car, and do stick around! we're thrilled to have you here.

Thanks for the kind words, everybody. And the restoration goes on! This weekend got new tires (the Lincoln "wobbled" on the freeway from tread separation) now I'm working up the nerve to order and install Super Coupe's rear subframe bushing kit

Hi Peter: I was at the Sailing Goat in Richmond on August 23rd and I think I saw your Markaro there? I love fun funky unusual cars and NEVER have seen anything like this. I took a number of pictures! Was that your car? If it is, it's gorgeous! Love the color, too. Congratulations on your new purchase! Your other cars sound amazing too!

Hey Janeyewe, nice to hear from you and hope you enjoyed your Sailing Goat experience. Yes, that was my Markaro, parked on the levee near my floating home. The current custodian of the Markaro, which is my current daily driver. The Lincoln gets attention everywhere it goes. The conversion was beautifully executed and the Markaro makes a better pick-up than my old El Camino ever did. If you have a Mark VIII with rear-end damage, I would recommend this conversion.

Also, yes, I have a few other cars (I'm retired). I recently sold my '63 Avanti R2 but still have these fun toys.

Next time you visit the Sailing Goat and see the Lincoln, look for the house with the draw bridge, knock and say hi!
