Need catalitic converter help

The passenger side cat on my 93 MK VIII has a leak.
The cat is connected to a Y-pipe that wraps around to the drivers side cat and also the 3rd cat.[This is all one unit].
The dealer wants almost 2000 dollars just for the part, and the local muffler shop says it will be very expensive to make a universal cat from scratch with the bends and the O2 senser.
Does anyone know where I can get an aftermarket cat for the passenger side?
The car has the stock exhust system in it, and it has to be able to pass inspection in Virginia.
This is my first post, but this web site has been a great source of information.

RE: Need catalitic converter help

Junkyard is going to be your best bet, i think.

I don't remember which side, but one of the cats is integrated into the exhaust manifold. If that's the one that needs to be replaced, the k-member will probably have to come down and the whole manifold will need to be replaced. There's no real way to make a universal cat work in that application.

Depending on how stringent the emissions tests are in viriginia, you may be able to pick up some headers and some aftermarket high-flow cats and make that work for less than $2k. But that will also require dropping the k-member, as well as some other exhaust work.

Bottom line, i hope you work on your own cars. It's not that hard to drop the k-member, but if someone else is doing it they're going to charge you an arm and a leg.

Welcome!

Thanks for the replys.
I searched the internet and found the whole unit[ Both the right and rear cat and the Y-pipe ], at converters.com for 283 dollars. { free shipping and no tax }. It is an exact replacement part and should bolt right in.
I can't believe the dealer wanted almost 2000 dollars for the same part!
I highly recommend doing an internet search before buying expensive parts for one of this great cars.

RE: Need catalitic converter help

i will sell you one of 5 stock cats i have at my house. 40 dollars plus shipping. at my shop a cat like that would be 160 installed. a good cat should cost no less then 140 installed or they might be using some crap brand. i have been at the shop for both a left and right side cat removeal and replacment of a high flow cat. the driver side is a pita but the passenger is a joke.
