Silhouette Mark IV

RE: Silhouette Mark IV

These cars were made FOR FoMoCo by American SunRoof Corp. (ASC) in Southgate, Michigan. It is unknown WHY, but they were marketed only in Ohio and West Virginia, by the Lincoln Mercury Ford Zone Office there. The cars were specially made by Ford, at the Wixom Plant where they were made, and then sent via rail car to ASC for finishing. Most all of the unique parts were actually fabricated BY Ford, and packed into the trunks of the cars, for off-line finishing. (read: By Hand).
Besides the above Mark V there was also a T-Bird. The 'Bird came only in what had been an exclusive Mark V color, "Black Diamond-Fire" metallic. (Sales Code 1L). The T-Bird buyer normally had to choose between either a Power Glass MoonRoof *OR* the rear Landau Vinyl top. IF he/she wanted a moonroof, they had to get the full length vinyl top. However, on this special model, Ford installed the rear 1/4 heavily padded vinyl top AND then ASC installed the moonroof, making the 1976 the only T-Bird to ever have the combination of both items, up until that time! In addition, the T-Bird also had red velour interior, but red leather was an option. The 'Bird also came with an ASC installed trunk lid simulted spare tire, similiar to that used on the Stutz Blackhawk. 32 of the 'Birds were made. I have read, elsewhere that 200 was the MAX number of the 1976 Silhouette Mark Vs to be made, but that considerably FEWER actually rolled out of ASC. ASC has been known to keep lousey production records of specialty cars it does. I had loads of help from an insider there to obtain the info I have on the ascMcLarens, otherwise.....forget it!
Frequently it has been said that these twins were made to celebrate the Bcentinel taking place in America then. This is incorrect. They were made to comemmorate something else....and I can't recall what THAT was.

RE: Silhouette Mark IV

It always ways amazes me how you come up with that stuff, Sandy, and I sure appreciate learning a lot about FoMoCo cars by reading your posts :)

Thanks,
Marcus.

RE: Silhouette Mark IV

Well....I did error. I kept typing MARK V when I knew better! :) It was Mark IV (4).
It's just that I've always had most of my "car-interest" in rare limited edition small run or promotional models, and therein my strongest interest in cars. I will never buy a "regular" model, it's always got to be a comemmorative Edition, a Limited Edition, a Special Edition or an Anniversary Edition or something akin to that. This I blame on 27 years of selling cars and seeing the S.O.S day in & day out until it became "invisable" to me. (Who else would order a Flamingo-Pink Mark 7?)

RE: Silhouette Mark IV

I have one of the Silhouette Mark IV. It is just like the one in the Picture. It has been stored for 20 years. Any Idea how to value it for insurance?

RE: Silhouette Mark IV

It would most likely require an appraisal. There are companies that specialize in this type of vehicle insurance. Usually low mileage show cars or antiques have this type of insurance. There are usually limitations as far as mileage and use. I've heard you may also take out a separate policy, separate from your other automotive coverage, to cover stored vehicles.

Welcome! :D

RE: Silhouette Mark IV

Wow thanks for the fast reply. I was guessing the value was around 10K but the car is so rare I can’t find a sale to compare Value. The car is in immaculate condition but has not been started in 15 plus years. There are allot of Bill Blass and other limited run cars that I have seen going for around 4.5K. I will Post some Pics when I get some time. Thanks for the advice.
