srt race

did anyone here race a neon srt and lose big time. I'm asking because I got an email from a friend that was on a srt forum and sent me the post and it said that someone beat a 97+ mark 8 by like 6 cars, and the mark 8 only runs 17's blah blah blah. these posts just make me mad and was wondering if anyone here knew the real story. I don't know how to move the post over here to show you guys.

RE: srt race

It doesn't sound like it would be worth it anyway. Those people obviously have no clue what they're talking about. Maybe they meant Mark VII.

RE: srt race

This guy is here in Detroit, I don't know who he run against, but his fastest run at Midland track was 14.3 or so. He did say he couldn't pass the mark, when they went from a 35 roll. From a dig - that's a different story. BTW, my girlfriend told me about it LOL and now she wants an SRT.

RE: srt race

SRT or not, look at it. It's still a neon.

Sounds like a ricer comment. Why is there so much hate in the world ???
[dd]... plus most of us are only going to see the taillights of "that neon"

RE: srt race

Huh...ricer comment? I don't get it. Anyway, give me a race from 60-140 in that POS and we'll see what happens. Like I said, it's still a neon. No hate, but I just think Neons are ugly and junk.

RE: srt race

I was thinking about getting a 2001 or 2002 2dr non RT stratus with a manual transmission before I found out that Mark 8's were cool. The reason being is that I wanted to drop the neon turbo engine in there, then I could have a 2dr turbo, and cheaper insurance :) Why do all the turbos have to have extra doors the wrx, the lancer, and the srt4.

RE: srt race

Even worse, it's a Dodge...

Gimme the WRX or the Lancer over the SRT4 anyday. Although the new Focus Cosworth sounds pretty good too. These are totally different cars than our Marks. It's hard to even compare them.

RE: srt race

sorry boys i hate to rain on this parade, butttttt bone stock these little wizzzzz buckets put 220hp and 240tq to the wheels! and run Consitant mid 13's trap 101-104mph No Mods how do i know you ask? well my shop that does all my Ls1/Ls6 work had 3 of them on there dyno and this monday we invited them to our track rental day. I got to drive 2 of the 3 down the track myself. Its a fun little car, much more refined then past neons ( i had a 97 dohc 5sp Peon )

and i was extreamly impressed by the GOBS of tourqe the little 2.4 produces, i was impressed overall with the car.

So untill you drive one, and/or a 2002 or older neon Dont pass jugdement cause you guys are way off base.

And it will only be a matter of time before they are Modded

And to the people who say its still a neon... you drive a lincoln not a hot rod, or thats what everybody says about us, thats the judgement passed on us. So until you drive one. id say hold your tounqe

RE: srt race

I'm sure everyone has a "car they wish they never sold" well mine is a 95 Eclipse GSX and I miss that turbo greatly, and the AWD, I have minnesota snow to deal with. I was looking at getting another turbo car, but the Mark has that great bang for the buck factor going for it, so I bought a Mark. I still dream of a 3000 pound or less turbo charged car though (yes I know the eclipse was 3300 pounds but you know what I mean)

RE: srt race

I miss my 94 T-Bird SC, car felt faster than the Mark but they are about the same speed.

IMO I think those Neon's are pretty cool, but you won't catch me buying one. Laugh if you want to but I even like the new Hyundai Tiburon, that car just has nice lines. But if you take the cost of the top model and subtract the cost of the base model, (especially with the Neon's) you have like $6000 left over. Take that money and dump it into you Mark. See how fast you will go, this way it is fair to compare. IMO the Mark shouldn't be compared to those cars anyway but somehow it always ends up in the mix. I think it is a good thing, plus think back at all of the people you took on the streets, remember their faces? And all the other cars that we give a good run for their money.

RE: srt race

I agree, the Tiburon has some very sexy lines.

Performance numbers are just that, numbers. They really don't mean a whole lot to me anymore. So the Neon runs mid 13s, and the WRX runs low 14s... Explain to me why I totally dismantled a WRX on the freeway, and through the streets??? It all boils down to driving, especially with those four banger turbos and manual transmissions. I've owed my share of turbo four bangers and they are a blast to drive. Having "boost" is very addictive. I think I'd rather build a 400-horse XR4Ti and save $15,000 dollars for the same thrill.

That doesn't mean I wouldn't take either car if it was given to me.

RE: srt race

I sold Merkurs in the mid-eighties when they first came out. Detuned Euro model as usual. Got to go to Detroit and test drive one of the first ones. The Ford brass wanted top salespeople to know the ins and outs of the car so they let us beat up on 4 of them. Way under-powered, too much turbo lag. We were told the engine could produce 30 more hp by the engineers but accounting wouldn't let them spend the extra $7.

No power = dead sports car. It was pretty fun to toss around though.

RE: srt race

Yes, stock they are dogs, but are VERY cheap to make go fast. A simple needle valve plumbed inline with the wastegate will boost HP immensely. I've had a few, with one auto running low 14s, but the tranny couldn't handle the HP. Another really nice set-up was to bolt on the smaller IHI turbo from the T-bird, with top mounted intercooler. No more turbo lag!

Remember the 1985 SVO was putting out 205HP way back then using the same motor. It is very easy to get 300HP out of these motors. They also came stock with forged pistons.

RE: srt race

I think that needle valve may be the $7 part I was talking about.

RE: srt race

Maybe so, but we're talking about a jump in boost from 12psi to OVER 20psi, so that's gonna end up being more than 30HP. Now you just have to keep the head gaskets intact!

RE: srt race

Also, if they could have kept the junk from rusting out, maybe that is why they put the plastic body panels on them. Don't get me wrong, the car was OK, but it needed alot of work to make it right.

RE: srt race

I've never had a problem with rust, although, what you WILL find if you go searching through enough Merkurs are ENGINE FIRES! Ford covered up a SERIOUS problem with these cars. They fixed the later cars with a redesigned fuel presure regulator. You also get the obligatory cracked dash with all pre-1987 cars.

RE: srt race

I read that the neons suffer from torque steer pretty badly and are hard to launch without smoking badly. On a street race you may be able to get ahead here. However, I am sitting here with the June issue of Road and Track. They test an SRT-4 and they get 14.2 @101.5, 5.6 0-60. Just some other numbers 0-90 MPH is 10.9 and 0-100 is 13.9, so that is where the powerband drops off by the looks of it. Don't forget that the mags can't drive worth a darn either...
But on the positive side, look how long it has taken them to catch up to us!! We had our 32V for 10 years now.... Time for a Mark 9!!!
