Stereo upgrade?

I have a '94 with the single AM/FM single CD factory player. I would like to make it a little louder without changing my CD unit. I am not too crazy about the way aftermarket units look in the dash.

Am I asking too much to be able to upgrade my existing system with better speakers and an amp?

I do not like the heavy bass sound, but I do like to turn up the classic rock every now and then. It does not require too much bass like other types of music.

What do I need to be able to listen to "Stairway to Heaven", "Free Bird", or any Rush music at super loud levels without rattling the neighborhood with massives doses of bass? These are just a few examples of tunes I am talking about. I was just using these as a basis for not needing much bass.

Any ideas of the equipment I could use?

RE: Stereo upgrade?

Right on with what Ray said. You can also get a 4 channel amp with a built in sub amp if you'd like, it saves space in the trunk, and less wires to have to hassle with.

With the songs you mentioned you'll want a fabulous tweeter to be able to get all the nuances out of the incredible guitar work. Two sets of speakers that are famous for good tweets (and reasonable prices) are the Kicker Resolutions and the ID Chameleons. The ID's also come in 2 ohm versions, making better use of your amps.

You can find the ID's at www.carmedia1.com

If classic rock is all you listen to, you might not even need a sub. Back then when music was recorded on records and such, bass notes took up a lot of room, so they usually just cut them out to save the space. Because of this, subs have a hard time picking up the bass of classic rock songs.

If you do happen to want the bass, audiocontrol makes a product called the epicenter, which uses harmonics to add the bass back in those songs.

I would however highly recommend chaning ur CD player. When I first started my system, I used a special adapter instead of RCA's to my stock speakers, and it worked fine. But when I added an amp, that adapter melted badly, and darn near started a fire. RCA's are the best way to go.

RE: Stereo upgrade?

my suggestion would be to add a 5 channel amp with one sub and new speakers in the cabin. id go with Image Dynamics as far as the interior speakers since they sound great for little cash. go with a sub known for sound quality, like something from MB Quart or a Phase Linear sub. as for the amp, id go with JL's 500/5. this would be perfect for what youre looking for.

Man, what a bunch of knowledge here! I do not have the JBL system. It is just the stock system. I have a few distortion rattles from either blown speakers or ???. I think this would be a good time to do a little tweaking.

Thanks for the input. I will try to decipher and decode what y'all proposed and start something.
