Transmission swap

I have a 1994 Lincoln MK VIII, it has a 4r70w that has lost all forward gears, I picked up a later model 4r70w out of a 98 MK VIII. This transmission is supposed to be better, and is supposed to be relatively simple to swap in. What changes do I need to make to the connectors to retrofit the 98 transmission into my 94.

Years ago in my '93, I swapped all the internal solenoids and wiring from the old transmission to the newer one, so no pinout changes were needed. The early models had conventional wiring while the later models had a flexible printed circuit board for the solenoids.

Something to consider.

I forget the exact details, but I recall there also being a difference in the early model TCC solenoid and the '98 models?

I did a quick search and found this... https://www.lincolnsofdistinction.o...hreads/kracker-98-94-transmission-swap.26445/

Hope it helps! :)

Very much appreciated, that article is very helpful thank you

Most 4R70W's will work just fine(some panther chassis cars had longer extension housings so they are not a direct bolt in with your driveline length), but 98 (some late 97's had them) was the first year with the mechanical diode and updated shift accumulator pistons/springs and also the last year of the mark VIII. You can use a Mustang transmission, but I'd stay 98-01. I swapped a 99 Mustang transmission in to my 94. It was very straight-forward. I retained my stock TCC solenoid, but had to modify the plug to work with the newer circuit board and re-pin the main connector (very easy). The transmission I bought had already had the JMOD done, as well as updated EPC solenoid and reverse servo was also updated. I never changed my speedo gear so my mph were off slighty. I also installed a Marauder/Mach 1 torque converter. Just BE SURE to FLUSH the cooler lines with a good transmission flush solvent. the number 1 cause of repeat transmission failure is debris trapped in the cooler from the previous transmission failure.

As I recall, the 98 and 99 have a 8 tooth speedo gear and I think the 2000 (2001?) and up have no gear and are electronically controlled speed. Pre 98 are the more common 7 tooth speedo. Can anyone confirm?
