Tweeter installation

Who here has component speakers? How did you mount your tweeter?

I decided that, for now anyway, I wanted to put the tweeter in the factory position (I have (well, had ;-)) the JBL premium system.) However, upon taking the door apart, I found out that it wasn't as simple as just pulling out the old tweeter and screwing the new one in.

After sacrificing an old toolbox for plastic, here's what I came up with.

(For those of you who didn't know, the factory tweeter is about 2 3/4 inch diameter, and comes installed in that big plastic box.)

I took out the stock tweeter (which is bolted in with very teeny torx screws) and screwed the piece of plastic over the hole. Then, I installed the new tweeter on the plastic. Pretty straight forward, but the actual work and figuring out how to do it took a little time. I haven't tested it to see how it will fit; hopefully it will go back in nicely.

The speakers I'm instlling are the Boston Acoustics ProSeries 6.5 two-ways, powered by a PPI PCX-2125.

RE: Tweeter installation

When I had my kicker resolutions, I took out the factory tweet, and could actually squeeze the tweet between the factory grill, and the door itself. It never moved and stayed that way till I sold the speakers. THen with the rainbows I had the kickpods, and now I have the door pods.

RE: Tweeter installation

ive managed to stuff a 3 inch mid and my tweeter into the factory tweeter location. great choice on amps. i love my ppi. tends to heat up a bit though.

RE: Tweeter installation

This has been a helacious problem for me. I haven't modded the mounts yet. Right now 200mph tape is holdin mine in.

That looks like a good idea there.

RE: Tweeter installation

What are you going to do wityh the old JBL system?

I have a 93 and would be interested in just the in dash unit, if you wanted to sell it.

RE: Tweeter installation

I'm just going to throw the old stuff in a box and stick it in the closet for the time being. I'd be willing to sell you the dash unit, but it won't fit your car. You have a single din opening, and the 96 (95 too?) and up Marks have a double din opening.

RE: Tweeter installation

The tweeter came with a flush mount piece, so I used that. Is that what you were referring to?

RE: Tweeter installation

I mounted a pair of JBL 1-inch tweeters in the lower front corner of the door panel. Didn't interfere with the map pocket or anything, but I did end up sacrificing one of the plastic tabs that holds the panel on when I cut the hole. They have an adjustable flush-mount kit so I was able to angle them up. They sound great and, best of all, they're hardly noticeable.
