MCE comes in 2 discs, when you install with the first disc you get a more recent version of windows XP. The installation on the second disc contains drivers and programs for managing cable tuner cards, tivo-like capabilities, home theater control and other things.
Hey Eric, if you have AIM message me @ boondocksaint10

whoa, whoa, whoa, xpmce 2005 is a totally awesome operating system. You can turn your pc into a tivo with an added tv tuner card. Hauppauge 250mce is a totally awesome card. If you are looking to pass your tv thru your computer to the tv, go out and spend the $150 on the os. There is no way anyone can lend you a copy without getting in trouble. It is a one pc installation, there is no corp. version that can be installed on multiple pc's. The card is about the same price, maybe a little more, but well worth the expense.

But you have to be willing to sink an entire computer so far into home theater use that it's no longer usefull as a computer. If you enjoy digital video and computers then go ahead and do it, but if you're looking for just the tivo capibility the same thing can be accomplished with vdub, windows 98/2k/xp, and the software that came with your tuner card. If you want to turn your computer into a remote control jukebox, that software comes with any soundcare that has IR capability.
What i'm trying to say is that anything me2k5 can do, free software can do better (if you're keen on computer stuff, and if not then stick with tivo)

The Microsoft remote uses fm freq to communicate with the computer. I have seen it work with the computer on the other side of the house. As long as you can afford the long cables.

RE: windows xp pro mce

The big point is the remote; the OS has to have the remote to interact w/.
I am sure you can't just buy the Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 off the shelf, it comes w/ a new computer system.
