Won't Shut off!!!?

I just stopped by a friends house and when I turned the key to shut the 1995 mark viii off the key just turned like it was not hooked to the switch. If I turn it into the start position the car will start and run but won't shut off. Anyway I am home with the fuel pump fuse pulled and the battery unhooked. How can I fix this?
Thanks
Matt

RE: Won't Shut off!!!?

The electrial part of the ignition switch needs replacing.

RE: Won't Shut off!!!?

Thanks for the quick reply and please excuse my ignorance but the electrical part of the switch is located where? I pulled out the lock cylinder and it seems to be fine but didn't pull the covers compleatly off the column.
Thanks again
Matt

RE: Won't Shut off!!!?

From the manual...

Switch, Ignition

The ignition switch is mounted on the lock cylinder housing and is controlled by the lock cylinder through a pin which is part of the ignition switch.

The lock cylinder also controls the mechanism which provides a positive lock for the transmission linkage and the steering system. The locking mechanism is located in the lock cylinder housing at the upper end of the steering column.

The lock cylinder positions are ACC, LOCK, OFF, RUN and START. With column shift automatic transmissions, the lock cylinder key can be removed from the lock cylinder only when the shift lever is in PARK position and the key is in LOCK position. The ACC position operates while the steering and transmission systems remain locked. Turning the key to OFF position shuts off the engine without locking the steering or transmission systems.

Switch, Ignition

Removal

1. Disconnect battery ground cable. Remove the steering column shroud by removing the self-tapping screws.

2. Remove four bolts retaining steering column opening trim cover and remove cover.

3. Remove lock screw and disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector.

4. Rotate the ignition key lock cylinder to the RUN position.

5. Remove the two screws retaining ignition switch.

6. Disengage the ignition switch from the actuator.

Installation

NOTE:
A new replacement switch assembly will be set in the RUN position as received.

1. Adjust the ignition switch by sliding the carrier to the switch RUN position.

2. Check to ensure that the ignition key lock cylinder is in the RUN position. The RUN position is achieved by rotating the key lock cylinder approximately 90 degrees from the LOCK position.

3. Install the ignition switch pin into the column actuator hole. It may be necessary to move the switch slightly back and forth to align the switch mounting holes with the column lock housing threaded holes.

4. Install retaining screws. Tighten to 5.6-7.9 N-m (50-69 lb-in).

5. Connect the electrical connector to the ignition switch. Tighten lock screw to 0.8-1.3 N-m (7-11.5 lb-in).

6. Connect battery ground cable. Check ignition switch for proper function, including START and ACC positions. Also, make certain that the column is locked in the LOCK position.

7. Install the steering column trim shrouds and steering column opening trim cover.

RE: Won't Shut off!!!?

Matt, I have another scenario, which I've seen way too many times on Ford tilt columns:

You are right. The ignition key cylinder is not hooked up to the ignition switch.

First, I need to give you a little lesson:
On any Ford column, the switch is ~6" lower down the column than the cylinder. On a fixed column, a single rod with a tiny rack gear on the upper end moves forward and backward as the key is turned, pushing or pulling on the switch pin as needed.
On a tilt column, this "rod" is divided into 2 pieces; the upper one has the rack gear turned by the key cylinder, is ~3" long, and ends with a cross pin. The second, lower piece, is shaped something like a "T", with the cross of the T being a plastic slotted groove, and the other end engaging the ignition switch.
The pin of the first piece fits into the slot of the second piece to allow this ignition "linkage" to bend with the tilt of the column.

Here's the problem that commonly occurs-- the plastic of the lower piece breaks. When you turn the key forward, the first piece can still PUSH on the second piece, engaging Run or Start, but because of the broken plastic, cannot PULL the lower piece back to Off.

Test my theory.
Can you feel the spring tension and the switch detents when you turn the key to Start, and does it rotate very freely when you bring it back through Off to Acc.?
Remove the ignition switch, leaving the ignition cylinder locked, and using a small screwdriver in the lower linkage hole (the one the switch pin fits into) see if you can move that linkage forwards and/or backwards without the key turning.

What do you do about this?

The linkage pieces can be replaced. They're not very expensive (~$20) but the repair will require removing the column and a very extensive bench disassemby, including separating the tilt mechanisms.

All 1st Gen. columns are interchangeable. Visit a wrecker and just drop another column in, if the price is right.

A word of warning: when you remove a steering column, DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT, allow the steering wheel to spin free after the column is disengaged from the steering shaft. If you do, the airbag sliding contact (clockspring) will be destroyed after you put everything back together and make your first lock-to-lock turn!!

RE: Won't Shut off!!!?

Frankie X BING, BING, BING you are correct....

I dropped the steering colum last night but did not remove it from the car and it appears that the quality plastic linkage piece is broken someplace.
It looks like the column can be taken apart while still in the car by unbolting it where it tilts. Can it be done this way or does it have to come out. Also I assume that I do not have to remove the steering wheel.

Thanks for the expert help!!!!
Matt

RE: Won't Shut off!!!?

Matt, you're going to have to take the column right out and clamp it in a vise or some kind of holding fixture.

Taking the wheel off will make your life a whole lot easier. When you do that, there's the difficult, steering wheel puller way, or there's the easy flat rate mechanic way:
Bolt the column back up securely.
Keep the ignition cylinder in the Lock position so the steering lock is in place.
Disconnect the battery for a minimum of 10 minutes to let the airbag module power down, then remove the airbag from the wheel.
Loosen off the wheel bolt in the center almost all the way, but keep it in about 3 theads.
Grab the wheel at 9 and 3 o'clock. Applying a steady, strong pressure towards yourself, wiggle the wheel from side to side until it pops free of the taper it's on. That's why I want you to leave the bolt in place-- so you don't hit yourself in the head with the steering wheel when it pops off!

All the online shop manuals Ford provides me with don't go back far enough for me to "copy and paste" detailed teardown instructions.

Maybe someone else can help there?
Driller?

I'll talk to my parts guys tomorrow and get you part numbers for what you need.

Hold on! I'll keep you posted.

RE: Won't Shut off!!!?

Matt, on your '95 it's the upper piece with the rack that's plastic. It usually breaks near where the cross pin is. The lower half is steel and will be intact.

You'll only need the upper piece: F2DZ-3E723-A. The Canadian price is $24.00, so you'll pay less down there.

If you can't get teardown instructions, I advise you to buy the part first, so you'll know exactly what you're looking for amongst all the linkages, pins, and pivots you'll see inside your steering column!

RE: Won't Shut off!!!?

I have both of those plastic linkage parts new if you are intrested. I thought that was the problem I had bti it turns out the remote start module wasn't letting the car shut off.

I hope this helps...
