greenKIN is home

RE: greenKIN is home

It has a handfull of items that our Mark VIIIs didn't have, Nick - but on the other side of the coin our Mark VIIIs had many things this car lacks. The one I'll miss the most is the intrgral voice activated telephone. Lincoln (Ford) has discontinued this option, as the phone was analog, and nobody wanted it anymore. Also missing are the "puddle lamps" biult into the side view mirrors, however these mirrors pivot and can be pivoted against the side glass for tight parking spaces or knocked off. Thankfully, (unlike really stupid Cadillac) you can still get an in-dash cassette and a trunk mounted CD changer! :) Cadillac gives NO cassette and gives you a choice of either a Glove box ~OR~ a CD changer mounted IN the glove box, taking up the entire glove box!! :(

Who listens to tapes anyways? Other then OLD favorites, I wouldn’t listen to tapes now that CD-R's and kazaa have been working around the clock :)

RE: greenKIN is home

The Benz doesn't have the puddle lamps either, but they have directional lamps mounted on the backs of the mirrors. No cassette here either, but It's because they delete It when the car Is equipped with navigation system. They put the 6 CD changer In the trunk too. The phone Is somewhat like the Mark In the sense that Is Is voice activated, but unlike the Mark, It does not have to be "trained" to Your own voice. Anyone can operate It. It'll also dial any number just by saying It or You can dial It manually on the key pad mounted on the dash. The phone Itself Is a Motorola and snaps In and out of a holder In the top compartment of the console. They give You a belt clip with It to use when You're out of the car. The Voice Command System also controls other functions in the car like, If You have the radio on and You want to switch to the CD, You just say "CD Player" and It'll change to CD without touching the radio. Hopefully the future Lincolns will have some of these features.

You're right Moe, I don't even have a cassette tape around here anymore.

Buick Century from which century comes with an 8-track player?

RE: greenKIN is home

I am just taking his joke a notch further! :) The Buick Century has the oldest demographics of buyer's of all cars sold in the USA, so I think it would be the most likely candidate for a 8-Track Tape Player.

Now....I actually own the VERY first 8-track tape player ever mass marketed! It's an RCA console (wood) tape player! It still works and I own about 100 working 8-tracks ! The sound is fair to good. The cabinet is real wood, not plastic. I also have a useless 8-track tape maker (recorder), a Panasonic stereo turntable, and a genuine 1941 Emerson Table Radio as well as a 1932 Bake-A-Lite Bell black rotary telephone. Moving forward, a cassette player/maker and a CD player and CD burner. Camera? I got a 1949 "Brownie" Kodiak, the very first Polaroid and several hand sized cameras from the fifties.
I like old stuff, but it has to work! Nothing broken. Broken = paperweight.

Buyer base of the Buick Century for 2002 was age 75, on average.

Of course 45's are in cars. The smooth ride of the early 70's Mercury Marquis were smooth enough to cut a diamond, they would be smooth enough to stop the skipping of a 45. Can you imagine how much smoother the ride is in GreenKin? 30 years of progress would probably allow someone to do a circumcision(sp) in the back of a Town Car.

Sandy: I wonder how many remember 45 rpm players in cars?

My Dad's 1959 Imperial LeBaron 4-Door Southampton had one. It was made by RCA and played weird records. I think they were speed 33 - 1/3rd RPM. I dunno, but some weird speed I seem to recall. Only skipped over RR tracks, though - pretty good for the time-frame. All I recall playing was Frank Sinatra records. I was 12 years old & wanted Gene Autry and Western stuff.

Sandy: they were made by RCA, but the ones I remember played standard (for it's day) 45s.
