motor oil

I was running 5w30 dino oil, the car ran rough.
Running mobil 1 10w30, the car is runs smoother.

I also like the fact that I can run mobil 1 for 6k miles. So I think that covers the extra cost.

You can say racing on the Drag Strip isn't racing. But I think the piles of trophies/cash I've won at the strip speaks for itself.

But what do I know... I'm just a silly girl that thinks she's a race car driver.

Max, you used Mobil 1 yourself both in your 96 and your 98 and you only took them to the track once, what gives? Also, my car maybe stock but I take it up to 7000rpm on a daily basis.

Well I used mobil 1 so that I can get extended drain intervals. I never raced any of my marks. Also dino oil breaks down a bit quicker during regular driving and since my 98 would do a lot of standing in the garage I didn't want to change the oil every 1.5k miles. I drove that car 5k miles a year. So I wanted to change the oil with mobil 1 for that reason, once a year.

I also use Mobil 1 in my Vette since that is what the factory calls for. And I am using it in our 1998 Crown Vic... that car gets about 30k miles a year so I change it every 6k or so, I don't want to be under that car every month.

Mobil 1 is superior oil for many reasons... everyone just got caught up in the "race" discussion. Motorcraft synthetic blend oil is also very good costs less than 1/2 of what Mobil 1 costs, and I am using it in a 1997 T bird every 5k. I think it is a more cost effective solution than Mobil.

So it's more a case of not practicing what you preach?

It's ok for you to waste 5.00 a qrt oil on a "garage queen" that hardly never moves but us folks that actually "DRIVE" our cars and race them on a frequent basis shouldn't use it??

Sounds like passing on BAD INFO to me, because you dont even follow your "suggestions"..

now that makes sense.

I had a gripe with 0w oil because not many members have used it. Nor do I have any personal experience to back it up. But I have experienced leaks going from 10w to 5w. So I would think the same would apply to 0w...

I stated in several of my posts that Mobil 1 is superior to dino. No question about it. But it is also significantly more expensive. Most of us can save some money by sticking to good semi-synthetic regular oil. That is all I am saying, end of story.

Get your facts straight, and stop accusing me of things I haven't done.

I believe that if you are changing your oil every 3k no matter what kind oil you are using, you are just wasting $ buying synthetic. Most ANY oil sold today (given a like API number) will be great. If you are keeping your oil change interval at manufacturers recommended (or beyond), synthetic may be for you. I use 5W30 Mobile 1 in my Lincoln and Shell Retella T in my diesel truck. I change it twice a year....a may hit 5,000 (or more)miles, I may not. I will not go over 7500 miles in the truck as it is still under Ford warranty. After that, I will probably go to oil analysis to determine OCI.

Get your facts straight, and stop accusing me of things I haven't done.

My facts ARE straight.. I'm not the guy that was crawfishing back and forth on each side of the fence, purely for argumentative reasons.

Let me get this STRAIGHT as you put it.

First.."no one needs mobile 1" because we aren't RACERS.

But that doesnt apply to "your vette, your 96, or your 98".

But your Vette isn't a race car either, per your definition which differs greatly from WEBTERS definition.

Yet you want to WASTE 5.00 a qrt oil on a car that you dont drive much, but it's stupid for me to waste 5.00 a qrt oil on a car that I race literally EVERY WEEK and put well over 50K a year on..

M'kay.. I understand...NOT.

Like you said.. "end of story"... as I'm done trying to debate this topic with you.

and I'll leave you with..

YOUR RIGHT, YOU WIN...HAPPY?

It's just like the regular Mobil 1 0w-30 but super doped up on additives for racing and extended use intervals.

Talk about taking something WAY out of context. Its NOT about the definition of a "race car" or the history of racing, or how many times you hit the track, or any of that BS, so back off guys.

The point that Max is trying to make is that under normal circumstances "regular" oil will suffice, but for a car that sees a lot of "abuse"(be it drag strip, or like Serge said, daily 7k blasts) than different oil is a good idea. This all started by Serge recommending a lighter weight synthetic oil for his car and than someone took Max's "who races a M8" comment WAY THE F out of context. So...instead of getting into this huge discussion of where the line between a race car and NOT a race car, pay attention to the simple fact that oil types is ALWAYS going to be a personal preference, and a matter of opinion because no one is showing facts.

Ok Max, try that logic with a cop on the street.
FLY past one at 100MPH and then try to tell him..
Officer..I'm in a mark 8, it's not a race car.. so I cant be RACING.
WHATEVERRRRR DOOD

Seriously....what does that have to do with anything? Just because a car can go 100mph, doesn't make it a RACE CAR and doens't mean you're RACING it. BAD analogy. :)

My facts ARE straight.. I'm not the guy that was crawfishing back and forth on each side of the fence, purely for argumentative reasons.

No need to insult, haha, whatever crawfishing means.

First.."no one needs mobile 1" because we aren't RACERS.

I'm still confused on this one.....again, why are we trying to define "racers"?

My stand point....oil is oil for a daily driver in normal situations. If I had JP's car that only sees track time and weekend use, I'd use good oil due to the lack of use, and mainly track time.

Yet you want to WASTE 5.00 a qrt oil on a car that you dont drive much, but it's stupid for me to waste 5.00 a qrt oil on a car that I race literally EVERY WEEK and put well over 50K a year on.

Again with the "racer" analogy....I'm with Max....if Mobil 1 is factory spec, why would he put $.59 Walmart brand oil?

What you guys made this into, is EXACTLY what I wanted to avoid, personal opinions get involved and it blows up. Kinda like tire preferences, or which Store brand of parts to use, or brand of undies we wear, haha. :D

I believe that if you are changing your oil every 3k no matter what kind oil you are using, you are just wasting $ buying synthetic.

Thats also a good point Bud....I didn't take the intervals into consideration. Here's how I look at the mileage change on my car....my reminder comes up, I pop the hood and check the color...if it looks dirty I change it, if not I run it another 2k miles and check again. The GTX has been pretty good for me, and I can go about 5k miles without having to change it.

Somewhere we also lost the point that those who use a higher quality oil by definition generally treat their car to better maintenance than the average Joe who buys the WalMart special. That in and of itself will have a great impact on longevity.

Just for the record, I have never used anything except Castrol 5W-30 in my 94.
It currently has 156k, and still runs like a champ. Also the oil is changed regularly, rarely will the oil ever see over 3k. I used Mobil 1 in the T-bird and almost made 200k on that one before I sold it. I personally believe that synthetic is great oil, but is not necessary. If you keep the dino oil changed regularly, it is not a problem. After hard runs with some of the TCCOA folks and fun runs, oil is changed both before and after the runs. You would not need to do this with synthetic, but I do not run the car like that very often. In the end use whatever you are willing to pay for, but my F150, Mustang GT and Mark all use Castrol 5W-30 and they all use the same filter as well.

Holy Schnit Kids! No violence! ;) Am I the only guy who likes Valvoline? I use five quarts of MaxLife 5-30 with one quart of Lucas and a Bosch 3410 filter. No more tensioner rattle. BTW, I agree with J, oil is oil. I am not even sure if the extra cash for the MaxLife is worth it, but I do it anyway. It gets changed every 3k, so why spend more on synthetic. I speed all the time in my car, but that luxo-barge is far from a race car!

Never. :D After having it TOWER over your Vette...I can see why they call em barges. :D
