03 Cobra MAF

I have switched to a Steeda CAI from my K&N FIPK on my Cobra, and have a shot at a 03 Cobra MAF for 50 bucks. I know some have used the 02 GT MAF without problems, anyone know if the 03 Cobra MAF will work without causing problems? That would allow me to use the K & N on the Mark.
Thanks

RE: 03 Cobra MAF

Hi Lonnie,
Wanted to use the FIPK off the 04 Cobra on the my Mark.
To do that I believe I need the MAF that will bolt up to the FIPK, like the Cobra does. Had a line on an 03 Cobra MAF, but missed the deal... any suggestions? Also would like to know if an XCal or Predator can be used on my Mark. Advertisments state from 1996 thru 04 Fords, but Diablo told me that they do not have one for the Mark yet and I could not use one from an 04 Cobra even if it has been unmarried.
Thanks for any info you can provide.

RE: 03 Cobra MAF

On a naturally aspirated Mark VIII... don't waste your money on a MAF. Pressure drop across the stock MAF is negligable, you really won't gain any HP (okay maybe 1 or 2 hp) from changing MAF sensors.

I would suggest SCT for the tune or chip. You can go to any dealer, or order the pro racer package and tune it yourself.

Personally, i wouldn't use a K&N air filter. They just don't filter well enough. I have a friend who worked at wix and did benchmark tests... the k&n was so crappy it damn near destroyed the machine. If you want an upgraded air filter adapt a newer conical air filter from a mustang onto the mark. The larger area will let more air through, and still filter well. But i don't think there's any appreciable power gain either way.

RE: 03 Cobra MAF

The stock Mark MAF holds up pretty well on its own. People tend to think big is always better when it isn't always true. You're only increasing size by 10mm. The Mark MAF uses a flange also for attachment so check and see if it will bolt up to the CAI. For a fairly stock to mild modded Mark the stock will do just fine. Once you start adding cams, intake and exhaust then you may want to go bigger. There use to be a big push for the C & L 90mm and yes it did give you more hp but it cheated. They use sampling tubes that skew the output of the MAF to the EEC making it think less air was coming in. The EEC would then lean out the a/f and you would gain more hp. Problem with this is you have no idea how lean it puts you for one. Then the MAF is used to calculate load among other things. Since the load is no longer true the EEC is now pulling up the wrong timing and fuel tables beside engine cubic inches. This is why most tuners frown upon these types of devices.

If you are set on installing the Cobra MAF you will need to have the EEC in the Mark reprogrammed for it to work properly. No Diablo doesn't support the Marks.

RE: 03 Cobra MAF

Not advocating a bigger MAF, but your statement "You're only increasing size by 10mm" is misleading. The 80mm is only 79% of the size of the 90mm. That extra 21% is a sizeble amount.

RE: 03 Cobra MAF

I am not looking for a HP gain, just trying to utilize the FIPK that I already have. I, and many others, do not share your opinion about the K & N Filters. I have never seen an unbiased report that indicates the K & N passes more damaging particles than any other filter. I have seen plenty of so called studies from other filter manufactors, however they have a product to sale. I have used K & N Filters exclusively on all my motorcycles, and automobiles for the past 25 years and have never had a problem, or anything show up in an oil analysis.. as to power gain, I picked up 30 RWHP with just changing from the stock paper filter on the cobra to the 160 buck K & N FIPK, best bang for the buck mod out there.

RE: 03 Cobra MAF

Lonnie, will the XCAL 2 work on a Mark? Like Diablo, the ads state all 1996 thru 2004 Fords. I want to firm up the shifts, and turn off the speed limiter mainly, and tune for a little more HP if possible. I do not want a chip, would rather use the programmer if possible..
Thanks
