1-2 Accum refresher

How do the 1-2 accum springs go again? Blue on top and brown on the bottom or visaversa? I didn't like the way it shifted without the bottom spring in but I forget which one goes where.

Blue on Bottom Purple or other on the top, it should be easy as you need the longer spring to sit in the accumulator and then slide the accumulator into the bore (Spring up), then the shorter spring, plate then snap ring. The tech section has a write up.

The light blue one is longer than the brown one, which is what I got from the dealer. This is "top and bottom" with the tranny in the vehicle, right?

While we're on the subject, what are the sympoms of a fubared accumulator?

My 93 has made a couple of wired shifts, such as slamming into a gear (1 or 2) while rolling into the throttle in a turn and sending me sideways. Also, will any real damage result if I leave the accumulator as is?

Most of the time the shift is normally soft with light throttle but unusually hard under heavier throttle. If it binds full time it could lead to harsh shifts all the time.

Maybe i'll pull it out and check it, maybe i won't bother. The trans has a sticker on it that says don't open, looks like it might be a ford reman from when the car was almost new. If it pops, i'll put a newer trans out of a mustang in it.

After a few more miles and a little more attention on the trans, it seems like it shifts nicely when on the throttle, and a bit harsh off the throttle. Sometimes it seems to hang up a bit between gears then hit second kind of hard, but that's only when i'm on the throttle then off of it or something similarly confusing to the trans. Not sure if it's normal as I haven't driven one of these in forever (and my gen 2 had a way better tune).

It stays locked up nice on the highway though, and all 4 gears seem to work for now, so i'll just drive it and enjoy 27 mpg on the highway for a while.

My '93 had the same. I think I read somewhere where some new 4R70Ws were rolling test dummies. Techs were to call an 800 number for instructions before service.
