10 minute T-Sat Replacement? Not for me!!!

Well I'm having problems with a simple thermostat replacement and figured I'd ask a few questions. Do you guys remove all the hoses from the tstat housing? I'm trying to avoid this because there's one that will be very hard for me to get to.

If not, how the hell do you get the tstat in with the oring? I just can't get the oring to stay aligned. I put some gasket sealer on it to keep it in place, but still no luck. I'm off to the store to buy another o-ring after the first one broke trying to clean the gasket sealant off of it...:(

If you replace it without removing the housing, you don't remove any hoses as I remember.

I took my battery out so I could get to it and removed all the hoses and put the housing in a vise. The bolts were hard to get out. I was afraid I would wring them in two.

I just did one and the only hose I removed was the bottom radiater hose so Icould move the housing over far enough to get the extension past. The O ring gave me a little trouble, but not bad.

I just reached up from the bottom with a long extension and broke open the housing. The I think I used an open end and slowly spun the nut losse on the hidden side.

Taking out the whole hose "nest" looked tough.

Well I got the bolts out without much of a problem. The problem is reinstalling the new tstat and oring. I tried to fasten the two bolts very lightly, then slide the oring in place, but the tstat kept getting in the way. There was no way to hold it up since gravity keeps pulling it down. That's wh yI tried the gasket sealant method, which I think would have worked if the gasket wouldn't have broke when I tried to clean off the "goop".

Maybe it's simpler than it seems. I'm gonna get that baby in there one way or the other tomorrow and see how she holds up. I just don't want to end up doing it twice.

I went out there today and got it handled without a problem. I had to work from underneath the car. I also reconnected the lower radiator hose. After I figured out how to keep the bottom portion of the thermostat housing out of the way and still leave enough room to work, it was a snap to install, but I did use a tiny bit of gasket sealant to keep the oring in place.

Congratulations!
It feels good when the repair is finished. Sometimes, you just need to sleep on it and everything works out.
