17 x 9s on the front of a Mark VIII?

RE: 17 x 9s on the front of a Mark VIII?

1/8"? 1/2"? Those numbers are so close to zero it does not suprise me it would work on some and not on others - particularly on the suspension geometry. I've seen wheel alignments run the gamut from way positive to way negative when roughing in alignments prior to taking to an alignment shop after major suspension work in our shop.

It does not suprise me at all that some wheels would work on some but not on others when the average clearance is less than the average tolerance. There comes a point where the larger wheel/tire combo is too close to interference to be considered a universal fit. Just my two cents.

RE: 17 x 9s on the front of a Mark VIII?

Clearance to spindle has zero relation to aligment. The hub is bolted to it and there is no adjustment that can affect it.

Every single hub swapped mark VIII I ran across (can't say a word about t-birds though) didn't have those problems.

I can fully understand the issues with 17x9 36mm wheels as I had a set of those myself, and while it was driveable, the inner lip rubbed on the spindle in full turn, when the wheel would flex.

The minute you go with OEM mustang wheels, you have either 26mm or 24mm offset. That's 10mm less backspace than the problematic 36mm cobra Rs. There must be something about the shape or thickness of those spindles that causes problems. 10mm is a lot.

On the cars you're talking about even OEM MArk VIII wheels would be very close to the spindle, probably 1/2" or so.

RE: 17 x 9s on the front of a Mark VIII?

I have been reading all the good info about tires and such. I recently performed a coil conversion. With the 1.5" lowering springs. Was wondering if anyone could recommend a rim and tire size that would fit without rubbing? Any pointers would be great.

Thanks

RE: 17 x 9s on the front of a Mark VIII?

on my new mark it came with 03 cobra wheels redrilled and bushed for 4.25 bolt pattern. With 275 in the rears and 245s in the front it would rub every where ok the highway. i could not driver fast on over passes because when the car lowers on the high way it would just rub at all fours. i finally switched to my old svt thunderbird wheels in the front and my cobra R nock offs in the back. i have the same size tires on now as i did with the old ones but it does not rub any more. i am doing a spring conversion soon and hope to make it look nicer. i dont expect to have many problems with it lower. on my old 97 mark it use to rub only in the rear going over big dips in the road at high speed. also my redrilled cobra wheel stuck out a lot farther then my current wheels. i am going to sell them on ebay. if some one wants to test fit them before i sell them just let me know.

also i want to do the hub converstion with a set of real cobra R's do you think i will have a problem with them.

Stock front and rear hubs. Sensor lowered. Offset +35.

Front 18x8 w/255-45-18 No rub, ever.

Rear 18x9.5 w/275-40-18 No rub, ever.

Now when I had the 18x8 w/255-45-18 in the rear they did rub over harsh bumps when the air ride dropped at 55mph or whatever it is.

The 275-40's are about .2" shorter than the 255's and WIDER!! ::grrr::
