1985 Dodge Ramcharger shakes and whines

2 related? problems.
The truck shakes when I accelerate. From a stop, if I floor the gas it shakes the truck but it also does it if I lightly press the gas. If I go about midway on the gas it will act like it wants to die. If I let off the gas or drop it into neutral it stops. It also seems to stop shaking (mostly) once I reach cruising speed, whatever it happens to be. Only when I accelerate does it shake.

Problem #2: The truck also whines when I'm accelerating or maintaining speed. If I let off the gas or put the trans in neutral it stops whining.

Truck seems to run good idle while out of gear or in park. Revs nicely when out of gear or in park.

Here's what I've done so far to try and relieve these issues:
Changed oil, filter (added lucas)
Changed tranny fluid and filter (added lucas)
Previous owner claimed new plugs and wires, cap, rotor and pickup but I don't know, plus he put on some cheap wires so I'm replacing the plugs and wires again.
Looks like the EGR valve wasn't hooked up to the water temp vacuum switch so I hooked it to a constant manifold vacuum source. - I can't remember if it gets vacuum to open it or close the valve. Either way, didn't seem to make a difference.
Most of the emissions is bypassed. The air pump is disconnected as well.
The exhaust isn't fully connected. It's rusted off after the cat and before the muffler. Sounds great but maybe the cat is clogged?
Ran some sea foam through the engine, no improvement.
Ran some ATF through the carb and it seems to have helped the lack of power issue slightly.
The choke seems to be functioning as expected.
Changed front diff fluid (added lucas)

Haven't checked: u-joints, compression, timing

I wouldn't normally post a MOPAR question on a Lincoln board but I have more respect for you guys than I do for some other boards and thought you might have some ideas for me.

Checked the timing. Can't see the timing mark at all so I have no idea what it's set at. Could be part of the problem. -- How the !@#& do you loosen the bolt on the distributor? I can't reach it.

Checked the u-joints and lubed them all. They were a bit dry but still had grease in them. No play in them at all.

The rear diff has a lot of slop where the drive shaft joint goes into the rear end housing. It moves back and forth a bit and in an out a bit with a clunk -- by hand.

I took off a spark plug and started the engine. LOUD sucking noise so I'm assuming compression is OK. I only did one cylinder.

-- also added some more gear oil in the rear end and added some lucas tranny goop into the transfer case since it was filled with (as recommended) Dex III. It took about a quart.

Not really being cozy with dodge, a long shot may be checking the TC/flexplate bolts.

RE: 1985 Dodge Ramcharger shakes and whines

Is it a miss, or something in the drivetrain?

Check the plugs and wires. I put new wires in my '78 chevy, and it still missed because one was touching the header and burning up in short order. Might want to play with the carb some too.

I hate carburetors.
