1993 Mark VIII - flat black

Former LOD President
Here's my new-to-me ride. About $1800 so far, but that will go down when I return some unused stuff to murrays and go up as I do a few more little things to it. Having it "done" for under $2k isn't too bad, just a bit over budget. I couldn't seem to find a nice one anywhere near that cheap, gen 1 or 2.

The suspension was fubared when I got it. The front end was slammed, rear end in the air. The previous owner had plugged the air lines from the compressor to the front bags and ran them to a schraeder valve instead. Had to fix that, replace the compressor (vent solenoid was shot), replace the RF sensor and both front bags. Fixed some underbody damage from dragging. Replaced both rear brake lines all the way back, they were crimped from being slammed then rusted by the gas tank. fixed a crimped fuel return line and a fuel vapor line. Rebuilt the passenger rocker out of expanded metal, expanded foam, and bondo. Check out the picture, from where the pinch weld is missing, back was missing (except an inch by the wheel well) and there were big holes from there forward. Fixed some huge vacuum leaks. Removed the intake silencer(s). Replaced the front brakes. Fixed a bunch of little dents. Sprayed it with cheap $1 a can flat black spray paint... and here it is!

I forgot how much fun these things are to drive. I still have to replace the upper rear shock mounts, and likely the shocks (i may just leave them attached to the mounts). It clunks like hell, but that'll get fixed this weekend. The thing turns so much better than the navigator, and is way faster too. But it's rather cramped inside by comparison. I took the seat out thinking it wasn't going all the way back, but apparently it is. The thing drives pretty straight and the ride isn't bad (except for the noise from the rear shocks). It corners flat. The tranny hiccups every now and then, if it craps out i'm just putting a newer junkyard one in it.

It had an air bag light, an ABS light, and a check engine light. The air bag light was apparently a bad ground where the sensor mounts, i just ran a jumper wire from the bracket to the core support. The ABS light is gone with a relay and a fuse. The check engine light went away after a few drives and a few WOT pulls. I'll probably still pull the code and see what it was. And I have some spark plugs to throw at it.

Looks great Dave!

I never thought flat black would look good, but knowing it's an inexpensive driver, makes it look even better.

I think your car has more pinch weld left than my red Mark does.:D

A few of us Michiganders might get together this weekend at my place for some Mark maintenance. Stop by if you get a chance. I'd like to see it in person.

Exactly what I was thinking, JP. Powdercoat those directionals black, either paint the chrome flat black or brush it, and it'll look awesome. What's the interior look like?

I kind of like the chrome around the windows. It sets off the flat paint enough to make it look clean, rather than just sprayed like some beater (which it is).

I'm still on the fence about the wheels.

I did the shock mounts on Friday. I couldn't find them anywhere but strutmasters, and they sent me metal plates with holes in them. WTF. So I went and bought new shocks ($36 for the pair at autozone) and they came with generic bushings that fit up top. But the bolt hole on the bottom was smaller. I had to cut the bolts anyway, so I bought slightly smaller bolts, but I still ended up hammering them through the bushing on the shock. For the price, though, i'm good to go. And the clunking is gone.

I threw plugs at it yesterday. Old ones didn't look bad. Idle's still a little rough, but not too bad. And there's a tick when you rev it and let it idle down. Like a lifter noise or something. All I can do is run the piss out of it and see if it fixes itself or breaks itself. :) The old oil looked pretty bad coming out, so maybe a few miles will clean it out a bit and it'll smooth out.

The navigator got waxed yesterday and stuck in the garage. I'm going to put some miles on this and see how it does.

Oh yeah.. the interior. The seats look really rough. Back seat isn't too bad. I glued the drivers door panel back together, it's not too bad. There's an aftermarket radio in it, total hack job install. I fixed a few other little things, but overall the interior is in poor shape.

It drives pretty good now though :)

One problem though. It has a moonroof. My first inclination was to unplug the motor and caulk it shut. But as it turns out, the damn thing works. Previous owner said it didn't leak. But looking at the seal, I bet it leaks. Can you replace the seal on these things?

there is a link somewhere on here for new seals, i know they can be bought, try the search or someone else might beat you to it, but you can buy a new seal for the moonroof. mine has a small split in it too and if i really pour water over it hard it will leak a tiny bit, i dont care about the car enough to fix it though!!

The sunroof on my navigator leaks, but the seal is in good shape. It's just a piss poor design... if you look up on the highway you can see sunlight around the seal because the wind deflector I put on it creates a slight vacuum, and that's just how crappy of a design it is.

The mark 8 looks like it has a channel to catch the water all the way around and drain it into the rocker panels (probably why the rockers were so damn rusty). So it doesn't look like it'll be an issue for leakage. But the seal is shot, visibly destroyed, hanging down into the mechanism and causing the roof to hang up unless I apply pressure to close it. And it's noisy as hell on the highway. So if I can do it for $25 or so, i'll do it. Any more and i'll have to think about it.

I was thinking that I will hate the flat black paint, but honestly it doesn't look 1/2 bad. If you were to make the rims black and lower the car it would look pretty sinister.
