1994 Mark VIII Purchase Questions

When did you buy yours Dave? How many years newer is yours? Even with all the mods you have done it still has not sold. Please dont interpret that as putting your car down. Seen it in person and it is a fine example. Yet it still has not sold. Fact is, the minute he drives away with it, it will lose value. The only chance the current owner has at selling it that high is to an unsuspecting/uneducated buyer. I could not immagine buying a car, getting in a crash and finding out that the insurance is going to pay out less than I paid or owed. I personally think its important to detatch yourself and look at the dollars and cents of it when making a large purchase. After the six grand he will still have to upgrade the tranny, probably do something with the lights and may still have driveline vibaration. Just due to age many of the bushings are going to be shot. Even though it is low millage it will probably still need suspension work. If the rear sway bar has not broken yet, it soon will. If quizzes are quizzical, what are tests?

I thought his baby was in better condition than that...but I could be wrong.

A buyer would be hard to find, but if I suddenly lost my Mark I would be picking up his in a heart beat. It may take a couple years to find a buyer though.

RE: 1994 Mark VIII Purchase Questions

If you pay $6000 for a car and crash it a week later, you'll get about $5900 from the insurance company. I wrecked a '94 Mark that i'd had for 2 weeks at the time, and they paid out based on what we paid for the car including taxes and registration. They depreciated it a little bit and subtracted the deductable, but we still got about $14,000 after a $15,000 total purchase price with tax and everything (obviously this was a while ago, at that price for a '94).

You can force the insurance company to take condition into account when you have a claim. Good insurance companies won't screw you there to begin with, the bad insurance companies may have to be sued to pay out appropriately, though.

Everything depreciates when you drive it off the lot. But you're underestimating the price, Adam.

I sold my '94 Mark for $3500, with paint chipping off the bumper, a poor collision repair on the drivers side (it didn't look straight at all if you know how to look at a car), with 154,000 miles on the clock. Only redeeming qualities were a rebuilt trans and some newer chrome trim on the front. Headlights were horrible. Since i've sold it, age hasn't done much to the prices of '93's and '94's. They seem to be about the same as they were 2-3 years ago.

In addition, you can up the value of the car if you save the receipts for any items that are not maintenance items and that have an "infinite" lifetime. The following are items that my insurance company will pay in full if it is totalled:

Tranny: $2100
Adj. Fuel pressure regulator: $100
Sway bars: $300
Eaton Posi: $400
Custom stereo: $400
Window Tinting: $200
Nology Wires (lifetime warranty): $300
Other misc items: $500

Total: $4300

So, if my car gets totalled, they will pay me market value plus $4300, which would come out to about $8K-$9K.

I need to do that with mine. Or get the car appraised and insured for the appraised value.

RE: 1994 Mark VIII Purchase Questions

Here's the deal. If you go and buy the car and are happy with it, good for you. That is what is most important. I just hate to see you ask for input and only see good posts telling you to go get it. My only intention is for you to make an educated buy. Now you know what you are getting in to and can only blame yourself if one of these things happens. I would strongly suggest talking to your insurance company ahead of time about replacement value. I would also suggest checking out what your premium would be with this car. My insurance went down 35 percent when I sold my 93 mark and purchased an 01 navigator. Kinda strange considering the value and chances for rollover. I also have a hard time believing that you will recoup all of your expenditures on the car. That makes no sense to me. With a new air ride, new engine and tranny I could push the value of the car to over 15 grand. I dont know what insurance company in their right mind would pay that kind of money out.

And for my comment about Daves car it was a compliment. Fine meaning really nice like the term "fine looking woman".

As a side note, call a bank and see what they are willing to loan on the car. If its lower than what he is asking there is a serious problem.

If quizzes are quizzical, what are tests?

RE: 1994 Mark VIII Purchase Questions

Hey I have a white 94 mark we paid $3000 for it with about 110k miles on it. I have had the car for about 1-1/2 years now and love the car. If the car is in good shape I think the car would be worth $6000 to me but that’s just my opinion. As far as the radio thing goes any after market radio will slide right into your dash aka no filler plates needed. It will take a little shopping to find a radio that you think looks good in the car and has/does everything you want it to. The shock amp in the trunk has enough power to run stock speakers and sounds pretty good for a stocker I think. If you are into the power and sports feel of the car next time you drive the car take off from a light kind of hard, at about 4500 rpm in 1st gear pull the shifter back to 2nd gear and lessen for the chirp and feel the car push you back in your seat, and try not to grin too big when you rember you are driving a stock Lincoln!

RE: 1994 Mark VIII Purchase Questions

The bottom line on Mark VIIIs and Continentals is you get the "repair it later" discount, even on clean cars.

With reasonable care you can expect 150,000 miles out of your suspension, but garaging the car and driving it are the main requirements....not driving hurts these suspensions because of inevitable loss of flexibility in every component.

RE: 1994 Mark VIII Purchase Questions

Just bought a 93 with 68k for $4900 off of ebay that I did not even see yet, and I am a previous 96 LSC owner. All in the eyes of the beholder.

RE: 1994 Mark VIII Purchase Questions

$6000 sounds high for a 94. I would try to get it for $5000 or less.

However, I learned the hard way several decades ago that it is better in the long run to pay a premium price for a clean low mileage car than it is to get a high mileage poorly maintained car for a super low price.

To quote a good friend who in my opinion is quite wise....

"Nothing is quite so expensive as a cheap luxury car."

Pay premium money if you must, if you are sure the car is right. These are cars to own and nurture and LOVE. Why sell yourself short? You're getting a tuxedo for the price of pajamas anyway....
