1997 Continental Alarm

Hello,

The factory installed alarm in my 1997 Continental has been acting up with the colder weather and I've tried most of the things that folks have recommended. I'm at the point of disconnecting it, but am unsure how to do this. I called a local car alarm store and they said they can disable it for $40, but I'd like to try it myself before doing that. Plus I don't want folks knowing that my alarm's disabled...

I've found some references of splicing into the dark green/purple factory alarm disarm wire and grounding it, but can not locate it. They said it was located in the passenger kick panel to the right side of the glove box in a silver box.

I pulled the passenger kick panel off but could not locate a silver box? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What do you mean by "acting up"? Is it going off for no apparent reason?

An OBDII Continental's alarm software is contained within the programming of the LCM (Lighting Control Module), which is in the dash, behind the headlight switch. Because it is integrated into the OBDII communication network, there's no real way to simply "disconnect" it.

Why not get it diagnosed and repaired? The LCM will set anti-theft related fault codes, but more importantly, it keeps a rotating log of the last 8 alarm events in its memory at all times. This lets a tech with the proper scan tool see what has been triggering it for repair purposes.

The basic inputs are:
-each door's "ajar" switch
-the trunk tamper switch
-the ignition cylinder tamper switch, and
-the hood ajar switch.

The most common problem I find is with the hood switch. It's a push switch on the driver's fender, about halfway back. It closes its circuit when the hood opens, so a simple test to see if it's at fault is to unplug it and see if the alarm still triggers falsely.

This is one of the few tests you might be able to perform without a scan tool.

Try it and give us any information you can.
