1998 Mustang GT Auto intermittent shift problem

Sunday 3/14 friend of mine just bought a 98 GT Stang automatic. I test drove it with him and even pulled codes on it, only thing it showed was IAC but it idled/ran fine. No CEL. Even got a good deal on it.
This morning he leaves for class and it won't shift past second gear, then it's fine. Then from a stop light, won't shift past second again. I have not had a chance to look at it yet but I was wondering what to look for?
So far I've got:

Tanny fluid
Tranny connecters
TPS
Speed Sensor
MAP

Thanks!

It won't shift past second? Or it feels like it is in neutral past second?

How old is the fluid?
How old is the transmission?

Wont shift past second into third. Car has 120k miles, original tranny, new head gaskets. Have'nt seen the fluid yet.

Look at the fluid... a bit of an odd problem, when I lost a transmission in my mark VIII (same one as the stang) it lost 3/4th gears, but all ford transmissions were upgraded for 1998 i believe.

A fluid change is in order... it needs to be bright red in color and smell sweet.

Alright, got to look at it today. Turns out it will slip its brains out when it should be shifting from 2nd to 3rd.

There is also a leak (apears to be tailshaft seal) so the fluid has been replaced regularly as it leaks/gets topped off. Either way its pink and appears to be in good condition.

I pulled a P0755 or P0775 (cant remember now) which is " trans solenoid b" according to my BOC tunner.

Im not too familiar with automatic trannys but my conclusion is its either not shifting into third because of a bad selinoid, or the torque converter is not locking up in third. (The 4R70W does lock up in third AND fourth right?)

Sorry for the long explanation, and thanks!

If the solenoid was bad, it would not "slip" it just would stay in 2nd gear. Was the fluid topped off? Could be low and sucking air when trying to shift...but I doubt it. Sounds to me like the clutches are shot and sometimes they will engage and sometimes they don't. The solenoid code could be from clutch material clogging and causing an error.

Thats not good.
Ya we topped it off. Im hoping the guy will buy it back now since he was a friend of thier family. He is going to get it looked at this week.

Cool, keep us posted. Don't be surprised when they want to R&R it and do an overhaul. :)

The shop replaced the "B" and "D" solenoids, fixed the tail shaft seal leak and dipstick gasket leak which I noticed earlier, and sucked out out all the old ATF and replaced it, new filter as well. Cost him $510 for everything.

We also cleaned out the cooling system, and flushed the brake fluid. Now the only thing it needs is an oil change and K&N air filter. Runs like a champ.

"Sucked out" the transmission fluid? What is that, lol? Not bad for 510...hopefully its fixed. :)

They use that machine where they attach a vaccum to the out put of the trans to the cooler and suck out the old fluid while the other side of the machine pumps in new fluid. At lest I think thats how it works. BTW so far everything is holding up.
