2 am....I'm viewing "whos online".....

J

OCCUPY LoD :)
And there was 7 "guests" out of about 18 people viewing peoples profiles.......whats up with that? There were a few viewing posts, about 3 viewing the "members list" as was I, and there was 6-7 viewing "member profile". Hmmmm...........SPAMMERS ENGAGE!

Maybe "guests" shoulding be allowed to view our profiles, or maybe only allowed to see minor details about us.

Hey there Cecil! I was never down from the rumble......I did nothing wrong, so why should I be concerned with "his" complex or personal issues that made him want to destroy me? No skin of my sack, lol.

Max.....me paranoid, never. Just found it to be interesting and strange...I bet they don't torque their wheels though, lmao!

yea but search engine spiders can view all parts of the forum even though they dont share it

on the contrary, search engine spiders is all good, I don't like the arachnid versions myself

Oh....I see what you're saying Mike.....people searching the web will get results in the list of the forums as part of their search, causing a "guest" to be viewing different parts of the forums. Kinda like petifiles peeping through the curtain covered windows of a ford econoline. Lmao (no offense if anyone is a petifile, lol)

Not as such...

Web spiders will crawl through a website, index it, and store it into their appropriate search engines' cache. Imagine you going through a forum, seeing something of interest, and bookmarking it. Basically the same thing happens with web spiders.

When you do say, a Google search, the search engine looks in its' cache, and if it finds website links with the words you're looking for, it shows you the website. In other words, web crawlers don't work in real-time per se.

Now, yes, there is ranking, and a bunch of SEO stuff involved on which websites show up first on a google search, but that's too technical.

Wow.....thats news to me! Stupid spiders! How do you prevent these "spiders" accessing parts of your forums?

You can turn off the function that allows web crawlers in vB's Options under the Admin Cpanel. But that's not a good idea if you're running a public forum, as it gets indexed, and that indexing may send people to your forum when they do say, a google search. One of the reasons forum operators don't allow swear words, bad words, etc, is because google (as I'm sure others) will rank your forum lower - it will put it lower in a search result- if you have swear words. The whole name of the game in the search engine industry is to be at the top of the search results. When's the last time you searched for something, and dug say, 10 pages into a google result?

Yeah, I was merely suggesting keeping them out of all of our profiles, hehe. It just seemed wierd, that there were 7 "guests" looking at members profiles at 3am!

I don't know how this forum is set up, and since I don't feel like logging off to see, but most vB Forums are set up to not allow unregistered users (aka. guests, crawlers, etc) to view member profiles, so it should be all good.

Naw, it was indeed "members profiles". But if you click on my name in this post...you can view my "public" profile which includes some "valuable" info, which was required upon registration. :)

Eh. All that can be turned off by a vigilant admin. Or does it require a hack? Hell, I don't remember anymore.

Lol....were not going to get any sleep if we keep posting to each other, haha. Its all good...if I was "really" concerned I would have changed my name and stuff already.

I don't sleep much. Too many years of 2-3 hours every 24 hours.

I've got my Tea, my Respiratory Treatment sticks, and iTunes is playing through my Home Theater Receiver, so I'm good to go.

Sammy, I tried to look to see, but I'm not sure where I'd find these settings. I don't know how the admins set up that part of this board, but if you tell me what to look for, I can check it out, and then it can be brought up to the admins to see if it is something which should be changed.

Depending on how your usergroup was set up, you might not be able to see all the options an admin can change.

If memory serves me right, I think it's under CPanel, vB options, Usergroups, unregistered users. Scroll down to General permissions, and check NO to all the radio buttons except maybe for "Show edited by" radio button.

Then, the robots.txt file should be edited to only allow whatever crawlers you all want to crawl the forums.

I'm going by memory here, haven't played with vB in a while. But if you guys get stuck, let me know and I'll dust off a copy of vB and install it locally here.

Thanks Sammy. It's currently set to yes, I posted a new thread in Website Comments and Suggestions.

They don't have very many permissions at all, but that is one that is set to yes.
