2000 Continental Reverse Noise

I have a strange problem with a noise when I reverse and the car is cold. It is as if the brakes are grabbing and chattering or I'm hitting some limited-slip system in the transmission. I end up having to back-up very slowly (generally not a problem!), but I was interested if any other Continental owners have experienced this. Once the car is warm, I can reverse normally. Apart from this problem, the car has been fantastic. It's done it since I bought it (2001 @ 9K mi) and it has currently has 55K mi. I figured I'd have the dealer look at when it "went critical" as I'd prefer to leave the tranny alone unless there's a really bad problem. I've had bad luck with car dealers making "transmission adjustments" for minor problems.

RE: 2000 Continental Reverse Noise

My wife had a "grinding noise" whenever she backed out of the garage. I fixed it by turning off the auto reverse mirrors feature. The sound she heard was the mirrors looking down.

Boy did I skate on that fix!

RE: 2000 Continental Reverse Noise

I wish it was just that. :( This is alot more "in the system" than just the mirrors. You feel it in the car. I don't do alot of city parking, so I found the reverse mirrors annoying. The beauty of a car like the Continental is there's an option to turn them off! :D

One thing I quickly got used to was all the stuff that goes on automatically between heating, cooling, seats adjusting, ride hieght conpressor, etc. Any other ideas? Thanks!

RE: 2000 Continental Reverse Noise

There could be a small metal ridge on the very edge of your brake rotors making the noise. A quick check would be to have the rotors turned or ground and see if the noise goes away. I’ve had the ridge on the rotor sounding so bad on #1 daughter’s Mark that you would think the wheel was about to fall off .

Also, semi-metallic pads are bad for making metal rubbing sounds.

If the sound goes away when the brakes are lightly pressed, that’s a good pointer to a brake pad/rotor issue.

Thanks for the idea. I have new brake parts on order that I'm going to install before winter. I'll see if that fixes it. That also makes sense that once everything has warmed and expanded there's no noise. The Lincoln dealer wanted about $1200 for a complete brake job (since they claimed the rotors were warped beyond turning). I found four Brembo OEM replacement rotors and Akebono ceramic pads (front & rear) for around $350 w/ free shipping. The rear rotors arrived today :7, so I'll be putting them in soon. I'll let you know if this gets rid of the noise. Thanks again.

Yep. Those dealers can really see you coming. That's why I do my own work on these beasts.

Still there ::uh::, so I guess it's another problem I'll eventually find out. On the upside, the new brakes are smooth. :p

If anyone is looking for replacement brakes, I'd highly recommend the Brembo rotors and Akebono pads. Be sure to buy the tool for the rear calipers. I'd be SOL without it. Make sure you have both the red and blue thread lock compound on hand; I wouldn't feel good about bolting up the caliper brackets or caliper locating pins without it. It took me (Mr. Endless) about 15 hours over two nights to complete the job (to my satisfaction). I'd prefer to not mess around when it comes to brakes.
