2000 ls 6 cyl humming noise in gear

When I put the car in drive and sitting still...there is a medium pitch humming noise coming from the engine compartment and will continue while the car is sitting still or you are driving around... When the car is in nuetral or park the noise goes away...Sometime when in park and turn the car off the noise will become prominent just as the engine dies.. Any help or things to check would be greatly appreciated....
 
Hmmm...this is a difficult one. Sounds like its something that continues moving when the engine dies? Could be anything driven by the belt, could be anything related to the airbox (i.e. vacuum leak causing high pitch sucking/humming/whistling noise), or it could be the torque converter. I suggest getting a stethascope and start touching stuff in the engine compartment when you can hear the noise. Also, take the metal rod out of the stethascope so all you have is the rubber tube attached to your ears and try listening again. This will help you direct where you are hearing.
