2005 Muscle Car Shootout at BIR

Every labor day weekend is the Muscle Car Shootout up at Brainerd International Raceway. Friday and Saturday are time trials and Sunday is the Elimination races.

We had great weather, aside from the 4 hour rain delay on Saturday. Temperatures between 60 and 85 degrees. I decided to run most of Friday on my street tires to compare my times with what I did at Rock Falls a month ago. I ran consistent 14.50-14.55 times. Basically the same as I ran at Rock Falls when it was in the 90'2 and humid. I was still screeching the 1-2 shift with no wheelspin off the line.

I threw a set of drag radials from Phranquy (Nitto 245/50-16). I ended up running 14.45-14.55 times. I was not chirping the 1-2 shift at all anymore. My speed was about 1 mph higher, but it really didn't change the ET's. I was kind of upset with my times considering it was 20 degrees cooler and I had drag radials, and wasn't getting any quicker. But at least I was consistent.

I had to take down a guy in a late 80's vette. He mentioned that he had 28 years experience drag racing. This race wasn't even close. He dialed in a 13.9 and ended up running a 14.99. I had about 6-8 car lengths on him so I ended up coasting through the traps at 14.55 @88mph.

I got to race a Dodge Magnum hemi. He dialed in a 14.90. He ran a 15.1 with a .156 RT. This kind of run may win most races, but not against me last weekend. This one wasn't even close either. Even with his .46 second head start, I reeled him in easily by the 1/8 mile then had a car length by the end. So I ended up coasting through the traps again, this time 14.52 @ 91 mph.

My final race was against an LT1 firebird. He didn't show up for the race then after about a half hour of waiting, they were going to give the race to me. All I had to do was break the beams to win. I get up to the burnout box and the I was waiting for the signal to do a burnout. I waited for about a minute, then I see the firebird coming up in my rearview mirror. There was no way in hell I was losing to this guy now. I wish there was some suspense to the race, but there really wasn't. He dialed a 14.50 and ran a 14.61 with a .134 RT. Again, should be good enough to win most races, but this one was over at the lights. With a .014 RT I stayed in front of him the entire way down the track. Here is a picture of the race about 100 ft down the track. By the end of the track, he was at my rear bumper.

My best time was 14.45 @ 98.47 mph
My last 5 reaction times were: .009, .098, .004, .071, .014.

I ended up winning the Late model 8 cylinder class. It was hella fun!
