2008 Street Stock First points race at Angleton Raceway

The street stock points series has moved to Angleton Raceway Park in Angleton Texas.

Friday night we had the first points race of the 2008 season.
2008 street stock will run roughly twice a month rather than the "week to week" grind we formerly had to deal with to "stay competitive" in the points.

I look at this as a positive, rather than a negative..as it will give the racers more opportunity to attend, and be competitive without dedicating 100% of their free time in order to compete.

With that said.. ON TO THE RACE.
We (crazy 8's) brought 4 cars.
1 mark 8
1 gran marquis
1 fox body mustang
1 lightning pickup

My first time trial was as follows:
TNT#1
RT - .533
60 - 2.166 (good hook with small burnout)
330 - 6.047
1/8 - 9.209
MPH - 76.78

30 min cool down TNT#2
RT - .512
60 - 2.25 (spun slightly on the hit, too little burnout)
330 - 6.134
1/8 - 9.287
MPH - 76.92

A little before 10PM (ouch) they call us to the lanes for round 1.
Since I had two passes, a 9.20 and a 9.28 I decided to write my quickest pass on the window, knowing that I had been "killing folks on the tree" I figured I could "give up a few numbers in my dial" and make it up on the tree.

So I go to the line with a 9.20 on the window

Dial in 9.20------10.70
RT ---.511------1.174 (see what I mean?)
60---2.29-------2.46 (left lane, let me down, I spun)
330 - 6.15-------6.99
1/8th 9.53------10.65
MPH - 69.74-----67.39
MOV left lane .2834 (beat him to the stripe by almost 3 car lengths!)
Off dial -.3303----breakout .0490

My round 1 RT won me the BYE run for round 2! (grins)
I ran the numbers from the previous pass compare the 330 times to my 9.20 pass and the data told me this pass would have been a 9.30 had I ran it flat out.
So I wrote the 9.30 on the car and took it to the lanes.
I didn't know I had the bye run until I got into the staging lanes.

Round 2
Dial 9.30
RT--.517
60'--2.20
330-6.10
1/8 - 9.26
MPH - 78.06

Seems that I am "1 round behind my dial in"...hahah I keep chasing it back and forth

Round 3 (semi finals)
I split the difference on my dial and get sent to the RIGHT LANE (left lane had been CRAP)
dial in 11.16-------9.25
RT .7219 ---------.488 RED
60 - 2.46---------2.15 (RIGHT LANE ROX!)
330 - 7.02--------5.993
1/8 - 10.93-------9.134
MPH - 59.75------77.20
MOV Right .1220
Left lane win breakout .2267
My opponet cut a crap light, I saw it happen.. and I still couldn't keep from redlighting DAMMIT! HAHA He also went on to Breakout on that pass.

I had been "chopping down the tree" and a wise old bracket racer once told me.
"live by the tree, die by the tree".. and I took myself out of the semi's..just like that!

I ran the #'s on my 9.13 pass and in the 1/4 mile it would have been
9.13X1.54=14.060

All in all it was a good night at the new track, the local folks seemed to enjoy the race.
I had a great time, the car "went well" the new tires definately showed "potential".

I believe I am 3rd in points after the first race...still waiting for the points to be posted.

On to RACE#2 coming up in TWO WEEKS!

Woo Hoo!!! Another season underway! :D

a wise old bracket racer once told me...

...if you don't redlight every now and then, you're not trying hard enough. ;)

Normally I would agree, as this is how I feel.
BUT.. at this race.. myself and one other racer were the only ones "cutting .5 lights".
Everyone else was .650 or later.

I had no business "chopping down the tree" on these folks...My bad.
HAHA

Such is life, Races are just that.. RACES, if you dont lose one once in a while your are not racing.

Kinda glad I did "chump out" in the semi's as that gave a "first timer" a chance to take home his first trophy, at his first race.... needless to say.. "he's hooked" now.

yea there's Houston Raceway Park that has "TNT/Street Race night" on friday nights which is a BORE.
Their "brackets points series is on saturday" during the day.

I prefer to be at the dragstrip on friday night rather than saturday during the heat.

The 1/4 mile bracket program is only 8 races, which isn't often enough to "keep my attention".

I actually prefer the IHRA 1/8 mile bracket racing to the 1/4 mile NHRA bracket racing.
The "grass roots" style of the IHRA suits me better than the "concrete metorplex commercial strips".

call me old fashioned I guess, these grass roots tracks are where drag racing started.
it's like "going back in time" when we run these events.

Also at these smaller tracks, you SEE the track owner and the people that run the show, they work in the concession stands and such and have hands on contact with their customers.

unlike the concrete metroplexes where the owner is some silent partner you never see.. and the concessions are run by some "vending company" that hires kids that "dont give a crap, and dont wash their hands after they DO give a crap".
(lol)
