If the OD is on, the car would take much longer to open up and would not run as fast because the engine would be turning much less rpm (below the power peak). With OD off, the car is geared much better for a high speed run.
One of the few times I took my 95 above 100mph, it shifted into OD at about 105mph and creeped to 120mph. I let up. Don't know how fast it would have gone.
