255 Walbro pump install (filter problem)

In the Vortech kit from DR there was a BBK fuel pump which actually
had Walbro stamped on it.
This weekend I dropped the tank and removed the stock pump.
Things looked OK with the new pump except for the filter.
The stock filter is less than 4" long and centered on the pump.
The BBK filter is over 5" long w/ the extra inch+ on one side.
It would fit into the tank bucket if I force it into an L, but it is
made of rather stiff plastic.
Is this what usually comes with a 255, or did I get a mutant?
Thanks,

You're talking about the "sock" on the bottom of the pump right? These "socks" are usually moveable and you can just rotate it to fit into the bottom of the tank better. You definitally don't want to bent it into a "L" because it will restrict flow.

They press onto the bottom port of the pump with a bit of force, but they can be removed with a small flathead screw driver.

Sorry about the small pic., but the stock sock is as wide on each side of the pick-up
as the walbro is on the narrow side. If I stuff it in the bucket, the extra wide side
will have to ride up the wall.

It came in a sealed BBK package #1607 - Mustang 86-97 V8.
I'm looking at a Summit catalog and BBK, Holley and Edelbrock all
have pics of this offset sock for their pumps (probably all Walbro).
5.0/4.6, they all claim they're the same.
Can you buy socks separate from the pumps? (no wisecracks)

Haha 86-97!? Thats quite a range.....

What I think is the problem, is that the Mustang gas tank doesn't have a "cup" inside where the pump sits. Mine had a square box so I had to turn my sock a certain way....I'm going to say that this is your problem.

Just curious...why not re-install your old sock, or buy a new M8 one?

J,
The Walbro pumps have 2 types of intake/bottom configurations.
The standard 255 (GSS307) has the large (dime size) intake that the filter (large) clips directly onto.
The 255 High Pressure (GSS317) has the small pencil size intake (go figure)
and the filter clips on a small stud (1/8") beside the intake.
It also comes with a very small filter
Another 255HP (GSS340M) seems to be the same as the GSS317 but has
the GSS307 large intake and large filter.
It seems the stock pump intake/bottom is configured like the GSS317, but the
stock filter has 2x more area.
The stock filter will not fit a 307 (what I have) nor the 340M.
Have I confused everyone?

I'm confused. It's been a long time since I had the Walbro 255 pump installed and now I'm wondering which one it was(is). It's likely the standard one, but irregardless I wussed out and had a local garage install it.

CORRECTION!
Somewhere it was stated that the BBK-1622 (255HiPres.) was the same
as the Walbro GSS317, but in the last few minutes I found 2 sites that
call the GSS317 a 255 standard pressure pump.
Just beware that the 255s come in standard and high pressure and with
large/centered intakes and small/offset intakes.
And don't believe which is which unless it's in your hand.
It really hacks me off that original manufactures don't post drawings
of their products.
Resellers will post any picture that's just close to being right.

Gotcha....I would suggest going down to the local Napa and having them check their book on fuel pumps and filters. They will have pictures and measurements for all the socks so you should be able to get something to work. Take your old sock in, and match the shape to a new one that fits on the pump.
