3.73 vs 4.10?

im wanting new gears in my car i have a 94 base mark. im i would like to go with 4.10's but the extra cost of a new drive shaft kinda puts them out of my price range. would a 1 piece 93 shaft be any better them what i have now? im sure i can find a 93 in a junk yard and get the drive shaft out of it for alot cheaper then a new after market shaft. if the 93 shaft would work i might be able to afford the 4.10's that i want.

so my question is if the 93 shaft wont work and i do need a new drive shaft would the price of the drive shaft be worth the performance gains i would get from the 4.10's vs the 3.73's? would i need a new drive shaft with the 3.90 gears? some friends and i do a bit of highway driving on the weekends often cruising at about 80-90mph (its like 1am and not much traffic) how bad would the vibes be at those speeds?

unless you are going to supercharge the car and try making over 400 hp with the car the 93 shaft will work fine for a set of 4:10's. you dont need to go spend $400 plus for a driveshaft if all you are gonna do is gears. you'll have no problem with the 93 one piece.

no i this car wont ever be super charged. i do have a turbo setting in my garage that im wanting to put on it some time. would you happen to have a 93 shaft at your shop that you would sell?

i called a shop here about high speed balancing a drive shaft i got a price of $60. would it be worth it to get my stock shaft rebalanced for the 4.10's? or it there other probs with the 2 piece shaft besides the balance?

i dont have any one piece left. dont do anything with yout 2 piece, its a tube inside a tube, with a rubber isolator between them, what happens is they can twist bad causing insance vibration. dont waste you time doing anything to it. just put a new post up in parts, willing to buy, 93 one piece.

The will vibrate pretty much the same way with 3.73 or 4.10s... one will occur at 65 and the other will be at 70-75.

Not to highjack the thread, but my 93 at 70 feels like your riding in a paint shaker. It's sorta intermitent, but it never fully fades away. What's the deal? By the way this is good info as I hope to be doing the same gear swap soon too. :D

junkman306,

It sounds like you might need to check out your engine mounts. Severe vibration like you mention were caused by worn/broken engine mounts on my '97. Otherwise, there's the rest of the car :) Low-frequency vibrations can usually be attributed to tires/wheels since those are the slowest moving things on the vehicle at highway speeds.

Lol. Thanks. I was guessing wheels off balance. Now back to our regularily scheduled program. :D

7 sek mark,

Just be aware that there are some '93 shafts out there that have vibration issues as well. It would be wise to at least have the U-Joints serviced prior to installing one on your car, since they're probably original.

If you do still have vibration issues, a 4" driveshaft from supercoupeperformance.com will definitely take care of that, so long as the rest of your driveline is in good shape. Bear in mind that lots of highway miles on a car with a driveshaft vibration issue will prematurely wear the rest of the drivetrain, especially the tranny output shaft bushings. On that note, it might be a good idea to set some money aside for a driveshaft anyway when you do have the gears in stalled. Otherwise, it could turn out to be a lot more expensive.

I went with 3.73's in part because I didn't want to replace the driveshaft. However, I lucked into one anyway and by using it, I have less vibration now with 3.73's than I did with the 3.07's.

I have 3,73's and a 93 driveshaft. I don't have any bad vibrations even with a 3000 stall converter and a Vortech. I've been driving it like that for years.

410's and Traction Lok diff in my Mark for the past couple years, with no regrets. I also have a DynoTech metal matrix drive shaft, RAXLES Super Coupe T-bird half shafts, SCP pinion brace, SCP diff cover brace, Cobra hubs, racing transmission, PI 3600 stall TC, Vortech etc... and more to come... :)

I have enough vibration to blur the rear view mirror at interstate speed now. Way much better than when the car was bone stock. I had cabin drone, and the dash board would shake it was so bad when I bought the car with the stock 327's. lol, I thought it just need the tires balanced and rotated. :)

I think it is impossible to get rid of vibrations in a mark... I have owned 2 and both exhibited the exact same problems...

And I even had the MMX shaft in my 98... it still vibrated that mirror. One of of the main reasons I sold the car. I can't stand vibrations.... The E36 bmw with 200k then crown Vic with 180k are completely vibration free... it has something to do with the way the mark VIII driveline is situated... something doesn't balance out right and it isn't just the shaft.
