4.10's and driveshaft are in!!!

I finished installing the pumpkin today. I worked on it for an hour last night and for about 6 hours today (no power tools). It wasn't too bad of an install overall. Although there were something’s that were a PITA. I feel like I went to war with the Mark, my knuckles hurt, my back is sore, elbows and knees hurt and I'm extremely tired since I couldn't fall asleep last night (Christmas syndrome).

So far the car feels exactly the same as before. That's just because I haven't "gotten on it" yet, still breaking it in. Can't wait to test it for real.

I did notice a slight whine. It doesn't sound like anything major/ loud, but definitely not the same as stock form. Is this just normal for 4'10s since they are a lower gear ratio then the 3'27's? Do you guy think this will go away once it is broken in? If I ride with the windows down or the music on you can't really notice it. What do you guys think?

Thanks for all your help guys. I wish I lived on the East Coast so I could meet some of you guys. No one in Southern CA ever gets together.

In my experience, once it whines, it never goes away.

I think I can live with it, but I will go the shop that built it for me just to see what they think.

In your experience does the whine get worse?

A little whine the first few hundred miles is often expected with many gears. I have come to prefer motives over the rest. I bought a set of no name 4.10's on ebay I am going to have to replace. Where did you set the backlash? Tight backlash will often cause whine. Especially in an aluminum housing. You need more carrier preload and less backlash in the aluminum housings because they expand at a faster rate than cast iron.

Not neccessarily.

I suppose it's true an aluminum housing may whine a little and eventually go away.

RE: 4.10's and driveshaft are in!!!

I had a little bit of a whine when I installed my 3.90s. After a while it REALLY really got to me. Especially when coasting from 40-30mph it was certainly very audible at other times it was barely there. It was present from 20miles after the install to 1500 miles when I switched over to 3.73.

The 3.90s were a bit too steep for me and 3.73s are more suitable for me. The 3.73 do not WHINE whatsoever. Exactly like stock. The first gears I used were Motives, the second set were Ford Racing which are supposedly made by motive as well. Either way some gears are more prone to whine than others. Richmond gear is prone to whine just as an FYI.

After 2k miles on my 3.90s no whine to report.

When I installed my used 4.10 gear punkin it did whine but now it went away.

RE: 4.10's and driveshaft are in!!!

Mine whined at a couple of speeds. Very faint. Those were 4.10's. You wouldn't notice it unless I wanted you to.

Beat the hell out of it as punishment for being noisy. That'll teach it.

RE: 4.10's and driveshaft are in!!!

Have you tried posi fluid additive? Eaton posi units actually require it or else they grind. Common problem in Corvettes.

RE: 4.10's and driveshaft are in!!!

Proper break in is critical. I always drive gently for about 15minutes then let them cool. Drive gently for about 30 minutes and let them cool. After that warm them up good and you should be good to go.
If it whines a little in the first 2 cycles it's not an issue. After that it should fade quickly.

Agree with DirtyDog. My experience:

I bought a 28 spline mustang T-Lock, new 4.10 Motive Gears, a full new set of clutches, anti- and friction additive, all new bearings, seals, even a good empty aluminum MK8 case. All of this was on ebay. Total cost was like $475, just for parts. I wanted the extra case so I could re-install the stock if the gears didn't work out. What I found out is tthat the pinion spacer washer came with the original case/original gear set is perfect for aftermarket gears. In other words, the gears (at least Motive and Ford Motor Sports) are mostly identical. Anyway, using the pinion depth washer from the original case gave a perfect gear pattern on the replacement TL diff, and 4.10 Motive gears. Backlash was set a bit tight, but with the superb gear pattern, didn't bother me. Backlash was maybe a tad less than 1/8" at the cricumfrence of the 8.8" ring gear. Mine wined slightly for the first couple hundred miles, then dropped off over the next 5/600. Never was obnoxious, mildly distracting at first, don't notice it at all now.

The whine seems to be fading the more I drive it. I drove for 15min@ 35-40mph, let it cool for about 3 hours, drove it for 30 min@ 40-45mph, let it cool over night and drove it today for about 45-50 min@ 50-60mph. Although it's broken in, I will wait a couple days to really get on it.

I tested it out for a little while today, I just couldn't wait. On a scale of 1-10, I would rate it a 7. I expected a "night and day" type of difference, but it's more like a "night and early morning" type of difference. In all seriousness, I can definitely feel a stronger pull at launch. I tried to do some burnouts but didn't get very far :B . I think this was due to the new 255/50's and Trak-Lok. I'll do some more testing tomorrow.
Maybe I'll get on the freeway ;)

I think you should serve a "little cheese with your whine". Turn up the stereo and enjoy the ride. :9
