i want a posi rear end and possibly 4.10's (highway does matter to me so either 3.73's or 4.10's) where can i get these items at a reasonable cost? also while im working on that i want to do something about that metal plate thing that rots b/c mine is rotting what can i do about this? possibly plastic replacement? (the plate you can see between your two mufflers) thanks

i picked up a used traction lok and 3.73's on ebay. they were used but i saved a decent amount over new.... lok was 60 and the gears were 60. i think new it all might run 350 to 450 depending on brand of parts. just make sure you look for some low mile parts.

and a install kit... should probably replace the bearings if you want, but i didnt ;) ....... oh and some gear lube and friction modifier.

I paid about 400 for ford racing posi and 4.10 gears, about 100 for an instal kit. Best mod I have ever done to this car

so does everyone agree i should go with the 4.10's and not 3.73's? also is our rearend a 8.8 10 bolt or what? what is the name for the rearend (98 lsc)

If you don't speed (>75mph) for extended periods of time, 4.10's will do fine. Though you'll need to get a new driveshaft.

i know youll need a new driveshaft, but as far as the rebuilt kit goes... is that absolutely essential? if i wasn't modding with the trac lok and gears i would never rebuild the pumpkin so, can i get by with just installing the trak lok and the gears - i dont really have a spare 100 dollars right now if i dont have to. :-(

ive also seen some posts were some people have installed with out the "install kit" if some of you guys could chime in ide like to hear how your doing...

Rebuild kit? The rebuild kit is for the track-lok and if your track-lok is new, you do not need it.

You really should do a install kit as it has new bearings, shim kit, etc... - if you do not, you may find yourself with a bad bearing or without the needed shims to properly set it up.

ok what about the posi lok and stock gearing? also why do i have to get a new driveshaft? not to worried about it just curious

You likely need the driveshaft because of the higher rpms of the stock shaft causes vibration issues.

Traction-lok with stock 3.08 gears? I don't know of anyone with that setup but it certainly is possible.

I know someone who did it, but I dont really see the point. If your in there anyway, why not put in different gears? If your gonna go, go all out. I almost wish I had gone with 4.56 gears instead of 4.10, but I will be driving across the country in a few months so I am kinda glad I went with the 4.10's.

the install kit is what i meant, the trak lok came with new races, but the bearings and all that **** be ok right? has anyone installed there stuff with out the intsall kit?

JP, you forgot about me! I have an Eaton posi with 3.07 gears. But I do have Lonnie's carbon fiber 3000 stall converter, so that helps.

The only reason to stay with 3.07 gears is purely aesthetic...I'm funny that way. I want the engine turning the rpms the factory intended, but I also wanted better acceleration. 4.10's would make me a faster, but I just don't want to be at 3000 rpms while cruising on the freeway. Personal taste.

POSI is a General Motors term. There is no such thing as a Ford Posi rearend. Ford uses the "Trak-Loc" YOU ARE NOT DRIVING A CHEVY!!!!

Except for those people like me who installed an Eaton posi rather than the Ford unit.

Eaton is the factory unit installed in most Vette's, which is a Chevy.
