79 w100 doesn't like low rpm at all

Hey gang.. my 79 w100 4x4 started doing this yesterday. Before this it was fine.
It's a bit more difficult to start.
Once started it runs fine at 2000 or more RPM.
Below 2000 it begins to get rough. At 1000 rpm it's really rough and acts like it wants to die. If I let off the gas pedal and let it idle (normally 500-700) it just drops to idle for a second then coughs a few times and dies.

is the choke sticking?

does it do this cold, warm, or both?

did you go through and inspect everything? make sure everything is tight, like the distributor, etc. if the distributor is a bit loose and the ignition timing is waaay off, it could cause something like this.

RE: 79 w100 doesn't like low rpm at all

I'm pretty sure the distributor is tight but I'll double check it. It's a manual choke and it was stuck shut about 1/4" but I opened it up all the way and it still did it so I don't think that was the issue.

Something else odd is that it seemed to drip a bit of gas off the side of the carb after it died one time. I'll get a photo of the area in question and post it. I coulnd't quite tell where the gas was coming from but it looks like maybe I have a loose seal or something on the carb.

that gas leaking might be a telltale sign.

I hate carbureted vehicles. Some people think their easier to deal with, not me. I'd prefer to plug in a scanner and have the car tell me why it's not running right.

Quick update, I replaced the stock electronic ignition, coil and distributor (for some reason someone installed a points rotor?). Anyway, I also retuned the carb which was WAAAAY off. Retimed the engine and it's running great now.
