'93 anti lock question

I am looking at a '93 Mk VIII with 110K. The message panel indicates there is an ABS problem, the traction control switch indicates "Off". Pushing the switch doesn't have any effect. Any guesses? The price on the car is right.

If you have a code reader, it would come in handy. BTW, they're only 20 some bucks at Walmart. Getting any codes?

I just got done changing the right rear sensor on a car. Without a reader, I wouldn't have known where to start and would've had to go through the process of throwing parts at.

That's the very first symptom I had of a failing alternator. It started putting out 18 volts and screwing up the electronics. Slim chance but a chance nonetheless. Sears checks your electrical system for free.

Brad, do the codes lite up on dashbord display? I've had several problems but never have I seen code numbers dispayed anywhere. I really like your idea...would have saved me big bucks by now.

Not sure which year Mark you have. The plug in for the ABS reader is on the right side. The way it works is the reader will beep so many times. The number of beep indicates which codes are stored in the car's computer memory. The code reader comes with a book that lists codes indicating problem areas.

It also works for engine/transmission reading.

Nothing on your car's dash board will do this. I would imagine, the only thing Faust is getting for a warning is the dash board light, cause the driver to do further research.

RE: '93 anti lock question

If you ground one of the pins (I can't remember right now which one ...) in the ABS connector, the light on the message center will flash the codes. Just crossreference them - no need for the code reader.

RE: '93 anti lock question

FWIW, I ran across this in the manual:
--------------------------------------
If brake fluid level is low in the master cylinder reservoir, the red BRAKE indicator will illuminate. If brake fluid level in the hydraulic control unit reservoir is low, the amber CHECK ANTI-LOCK BRAKE indicator will be illuminated.
---------------------------------------

RE: '93 anti lock question

How do you get to the hydraulic control unit reservoir?? Is that what would be called the ABS pump, or controller? Thanks,

-Joe Michael

RE: '93 anti lock question

You most likely lost a sensor. There is a magnetic pickup on each wheel that sticks out over what looks like a sprocket. The sprocket spins and the sensor detects the wheel speed. The system also uses this to see if your rear wheels spin faster than the front ones. If so, it engages the traction control. If you lose a sensor, the traction control will not be functional for this reason. I broke my sensors on the front when I dropped the K member.

RE: '93 anti lock question

I had the same thing with the ABS and the TRAC ASST lights. Couldn't figure it out until the brake pressure sensor went out and took out fuse #11. I just unplugged the sensor and replaced the fuse. After that the ABS and TRAC ASST lights went back to working normally.
