'94 IAC Question

I know it'a a coincidence, but I just had exhaust done, they chopped the rear mufflers off and replaced them with straight pipes and tips, sounds pretty good for cheap. Anyhow, my car now starts, stumbles off and dies, for the first few starts, then, after driving for a few minutes, idles fine. I'm sure it's the IAC valve... My question is, how do I replace it, I know it's two bolts, but I can barely even see it. I believe it's on the left side of the throttle body, if I'm staning at the front of the car looking towards the back of the engine. Any tips guys???? Thanks, Scott

RE: '94 IAC Question

Usual procedure for replacing the IACV is to unbolt the throttle body.

RE: '94 IAC Question

JP, Does this sound like an IACV problem? I tried spraying some Throttle Body Cleaner in the Throttle body, no difference, but it was extremely dirty in there.... Is there any way to take the IACV of without removing the throttle body? I'd rather not have to replace that gasket too, you think any tricky finger and tool work would be able to get the IACV off without removing the throttle body? Thanks Guys,

Scott

RE: '94 IAC Question

I've heard of people replacing the IACV using tricky finger and tool work, but no way would I attempt it with my big hands.

It's really tough to say with certainty if the IACV is the culprit. But a majority of times with these symptoms that proves to be the case.

I would not use TB cleaner. If you're worried about the carbon and gunk, a good series of treatments with Seafoam will do wonders.

RE: '94 IAC Question

Seafoamed it, holy crap!!! 5 minutes of studdering with big puffs of black smoke, then 5 minutes of white smoke, along with about a quarter mile of smoke cloud behind me when I drove it... RUNS GREAT NOW!!! I don't think the 83 year old previous owner was big on fuel injections services. Thanks JP, the car doesn't even sound the same now, it's smooth, responsive, and clean sounding.... THANKS AGAIN GUYS!!!

Would you tell me where you put the seafoam?? in the gas... in the oil... both... how much. I am a bit new at this and this will help immensely.Thankshttp://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a132/Zyda/Elias%20Mark%20VIII/C1.jpg1996 Mark VIII LSC

Seafoam is awesome stuff.

You can put it in the gas, oil, or intake, but the intake is where you'll see the biggest difference.

The best way to do this on our cars is to remove the plastic intake tube and pour directly into the throttle body. The can has precise directions on how to do this.

RE: '94 IAC Question

I use it in the intake and fuel. I use a piece of vacuum hose connected to the vacuum tee at the middle of the intake manifold. Disconnect the small line at the tee and connect a length of suitable vacuum hose to suck up the Seafoam from an appropriate container. I use about 1/3 of the container in the intake per the instructions and dump the remaining in the fuel tank.

I have misgivings about using it in the oil.

RE: '94 IAC Question

I pulled the brake booster vaccum line, used a small funnel, and about 1/3 can by just pouring it into the vac line with the motor off per the instructions, worked like a charm, going to do it again tonight just for good measure. Pull the brake booster line, pour it in with the motor off, wait five minutes, start the car, this will be difficult becuase it will want to die, and let it chug along at idle, don't hit the gas, just let it idle for about 10 minutes, then give it some throttle stabs. Worked for me, I'm sure others have different methods, just sharing mine.

RE: '94 IAC Question

IMO seafoam gets sucked/poured into the intake. Best place to put it is upstream of the throttle body so it cleans the entire intake. What I do is remove the intake tube at the TB, pour in a couple Oz.. run it a minute, let it set, run a while, repeat until gone. If you want to put something in the gas, I'm a big fan of the 100% Acetone treatment.. ~4 oz Acetone per 10 gallons. I haven't measured mileage, but it does seem to run better on every car I've tried it. Just what works for me.
