'95 clicking dash duct

Hi all,
I am getting a clicking sound coming from the dashboard ductwork near the center vents, behind the radio. The radio is out so I can see the climate control unit, the radio harness and ductwork. The sound is rhythmic like valve or gate trying to close. I had the car inspected before I bought it last week and the mechanic found a bolt stuck in a vacuum line that was preventing the climate control unit from switching between MAX/AC, Vent, Floor Def. ..ect. He said something about a bad Vacuum canister, But I just read about the Blend Door article for '97-98. Any ideas?

Thank you!

RE: '95 clicking dash duct

The Gen1(93-96) do not suffer from the infamous Gen2 malady of blend door failures, but they do have a 'blend door motor' which functions similar...

http://mark8.org/users/driller/pics/blenddoor.jpg

A/C Electronic Door Actuator Motor

The A/C electronic door actuator motor (19E616), which contains a reversible electric motor, is located on the inboard side of the A/C evaporator housing (19850) assembly and operates in the following manner:

~ Its function is to move the A/C air temperature control door on command from the control assembly.

~ Commands from the control assembly position the A/C air temperature control door with the A/C electronic door actuator motor.

~ A separate potentiometer (integral with the A/C electronic door actuator motor assembly) sends a variable voltage back to the control assembly to indicate the position of the A/C air temperature control door.

I would start with the self diagnostics of the EATC(Electronic Air Temperature Control)...

a. Turn ignition switch (11572) to RUN position.

b. Push both OFF and FLOOR buttons simultaneously, then press AUTO within two seconds.

c. NOTE: Display will be blank during testing.

After about 20 seconds, a code will appear in the window.

d. To exit the diagnostics function press the blue button. When the control assembly is turned back on, the A/C air temperature control door will self-calibrate for 20 seconds.

If no DTCs are generated as a result of the self-diagnostic test (88°F°C code is displayed), determine the symptom(s) and go to the Symptom Chart.

RE: '95 clicking dash duct

Hi JP,
I ran the diagnostic and code 02 appeared. Is there a good Mark VIII specific repair manual I can buy? My Chilton book is pretty general. :)

Thanks for the help,

Jim

RE: '95 clicking dash duct

I'll have to look up DTC 02 later for you Jim.

Meanwhile, factory manuals can be obtained at www.helminc.com , as well as a variety of sources for the CD versions searching the net. :)

RE: '95 clicking dash duct

DTC 02 indicate the air temperature control door cannot reach it's desired position or the door actuator motor wiring is damaged.

According to the manual:

CHECK ACTUATOR DRIVE

~ Disconnect both electrical connectors from rear of EATC control assembly.

~ Operate the A/C electronic door actuator motor (19E616) in both directions using a 12 volt battery. The following pins may be jumped to use the vehicle battery. Make sure the ignition switch is in the RUN position.

Trial 1: Pin C2-24 (BK, 57) to Pin C2-21 (DB/LG, 249).

Trial 2: Pin C2-24, (BK, 57) to Pin C1-22 (), 250).

~ Does the A/C electronic door actuator motor drive in both directions?

RE: '95 clicking dash duct

JP,
I was at my friend/mechanics tonight and it appears the door actuator motor is driving in both directions. He also explained what it's going to take to get to the blend door to see what happening....uhg. I appreciate all your help with this. I really like this car so I guess it's -"Let the work begin" :)

RE: '95 clicking dash duct

Hi All,
I talked to Max at Five Star this morning and he suggested I post the question > Can you use a Gen 2 A/C Electric Blend Door Actuator(FZLZ-19E616-AD) in my '95 Mark? I called him for the actuator motor part # F5LY 19E616 AA for the '95 that is in the EXTREMLY helpful posts by driller and he said he has never sold one of these. I am experiencing all the symptoms of the 97-98 failures. Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks

RE: '95 clicking dash duct

I don't know of many Gen1 failures of the blend door actuator and subsequently do not know if the part interchange is proper. The symptoms would be the same as the Gen2 but while many Gen2 owners have experienced a blend door problem, not many have repaired it themselves. Of those that did, probably few were Gen1 owners and even fewer had the blend door problem in both their Gen1 and Gen2.

RE: '95 clicking dash duct

Yes, Gen.1s also have a blend door motor problem. The telltale symptoms are the rhythmic clicking (that's an plastic internal gear with stripped teeth trying to move the door shaft), the code 02 indicating it can't move the door, and an inability to control temperature properly. It's not as common as Gen.2s, but I've done quite a few.

The F5LY part number is what you want, and the illustration up a few posts is accurate. You can see it if you have the radio out and you can touch it by reaching to the left through the glove box, but you can't remove it without pulling the dash back.

I don't advise anyone without a fair amount of experience to attempt this repair. It's very time consuming and you'll say "the F-word" quite a few times while your hands get cut. If you DO want to give it a shot, the Gen.2 instructions in the archives are close enough to get you through.

Hi Guys,
I just wanted to thank you for the help with this problem and let you know I finally got the new blend door motor in last weekend. Even my mechanic buddy wanted $300 to do the job on the side so I printed out the '97-'98 instructions and said my prayers :). I didn't set any records but a new set of sockets and 7hrs later it was done. Now I know why my dad has so many tools. You get so frustrated not having the right tool to do the job that you go buy exactly what you need. Not something I want to experience again. I took some pictures but you really don't want to see an amateur trying to do this. :)
