98 CE - Finally arrived!

Intercity Lines finally had room and delivered my new CE this weekend. It took a few weeks, but they were fantastic. Enclosed hauler, they covered it inside the hauler and the driver (very clean and professional) was very careful. Just a note to those who do out of state or eBay purchases.

On to the car! It's a '98 Collector's Edition. Every option except the block heater (the cargo net was added at the dealer.) Just under 17,000 miles. No dings or scratches. It's in pristine condition - it clearly never seen a drop of rain.

It was a little more than I'd like to have spent, but the Mark has always meant a lot to me. I've searched high and low and have yet to see another CE in recent years that is in such good condition (by my OCD standards) and with truly low mileage with exception to the one that was listed for $35,500 with 200 miles.

Here's some pics that the previous owner took: http://www.kodakgallery.com/I.jsp?c=jipyzdm.7s0ldtwq&x=0&y=xqadfv - Some of you may have seen it for sale last year. The first thing I did (it didn't really need it, but it's just something I have to do...) is washed, clayed, used Zaino AIO, then two coats of Z5, one coat of Z2 topped with Clear Seal. It looks like it rolled off the showroom floor. If my wife ever lets me use the camera again, I'll snap some updated shots. The depth and shine is incredible.

Still suffering from sticker shock, but very pleased overall. Enjoy. :)

Beautiful Mark VIII!

It's nice to know there are still like new examples out there.

Thanks everyone!

Leo - I'm not sure if I'll ever make it to a show, but if I do, I think we need to setup <unnamed CE> and Moose on a playdate. :big-grin:

As I said, it's a beautiful car...I envy the owner. It's got 16,xxx miles...how long will it be before he has to tear out the dash and repair the blend door? Same for the power positioning for the steering wheel? Is that a time or mileage thing?

Before he has any more miles put on it, he should definitely install a tranny cooler if it doesn't already have one!!!

Thanks again, guys. :)

I expect the blend door to be an issue at some point, although the dealer paperwork said it was done at 10,000 miles (in 2000, if I recall) and the tech noted "reinforced." We'll see. :) I have the parts for the blend door, along with NIB bulbs (big thanks to Sonny!) and various other items that are hard to find that I may need one day. I also have a fairly good relationship with the local Lincoln dealer. They said they'd do the blend door when the time comes for $350 (my parts supplied) which works better for me than wasting a weekend cracking the dash apart. Never done one and especially don't want to start on this car! :)

The steering wheel... the cable TSB was performed many years ago, which I'm told was the #1 cause of failure. I disabled easy exit, so the wheel never moves anyway. I'm not overly worried about that, but I have the parts for that too.

I thought about the trans cooler and talked about it with the service manager. He said he'd do it, but in my case it wouldn't bring much to the table. Although it technically wasn't needed, I had the pan dropped, filter changed and fluid flushed with Mobil 1 (full 16qt flush - yes, I know... bit anal retentive at 16k miles), the car will definitely not be driven hard and for that matter, will hardly be driven at all. Is there a reason I'd want a cooler? If it's worth doing for a reason I'm overlooking, I'll certainly do it.

Thanks again. I'm hoping my OCD will let me enjoy it more at some point. Right now it's tucked away in my garage, under a Dustop cover (Pollen season -- life ruining!)

If you aren't going to drive it much...probably no need for the trans cooler....but if you even drive it normally, the cooler will lengthen the life of your tranny by many years by lowering the fluid temp.

If production cars came with transmission coolers, most transmission shops would be out of business. If you plan on keeping the car, you'll be doing yourself a huge favor installing a transmission cooler.
