98 LSC Chip or Not?

You mentioned changing gears. The thing with your 98 is that you don't have a speedo gear in the trans or the output shaft reluctor wheel that inputs to the EEC to calculate your speed. Your vehicle uses the abs sensor for speed input. That means you can change your gearing without needing a new program. Now if you go over 2 steps from your factory gearing I recommend you get an updated program since your vehicle speed vs eng/trans speed will be off enough to cause some shift inconsistencies. Let me know what questions you have.

Is 3.27 to 4.10 2 steps?

Typical Ford 8.8 gears:

3.08
3.27
3.55
3.73
4.10
4.30
4.56

3.27s to 4.10s would be 3 steps.

Won't you give me three steps,
Gimme three steps mister,
Gimme three steps towards the door... I mean tune...

How much can a tune firm up the shift?
So should I do this also?

If a tuned shift is 10% firmer, then a mechanically altered valve body gives a 100% firmer shift. (Just a ratio for comparison.)

A reprogramming will make a night and day difference in the way it shifts. This is just the electronic side of the shift calibration though. A lot of people are pretty much satisfied with that. But you can also improve the shifts with recalibrating the mechanical side with a Jmod. The Jmod takes care of the fluid circuitry for better and faster flow where as the reprogramming takes care of the timing and pressures.

I looked over at the TCCOA site, and all the trans info makes me feel ill...

I can't imagine taking the transmission apart and drilling into things...

Anyway, if I got a tune and then later on found someone who would do the Jmod, would that require a different program?

Thanks!

If you let me know you are going to do the Jmod later I can set it up ahead of time in the programming. If you have any problems with the tune you need to let me know so I can back off the programming. Very rarely is there a problem with the Marks though.

I just ordered my tuner on Friday, for my otherwise stock '97 base. I'm looking forward to the results.

Stay tuned. (heh)

Thanks Lonnie!

Yours is done, just waiting for UPS to pick it up tomorrow. For some reason they didn't show up today or they are running really late.

Thanks for the update Lonnie. I noticed that the tracking info you sent a few days ago still says "waiting for pickup," so I know it's out of your hands now. Thanks again!

I might have to take a road trip this weekend to calibrate the 'ol seat-of-the-pants o-meter..

Mike

I most likely need one too! AND a J-Mod - the trans shift points are kinda hard, when I bought the car Jeremi told me about it.

Only mods aside from the J-Mod I'm thinking of are exhaust for now - getting rid of the 3rd cat and going with high-flow cats and a mid mount dual in/dual out 50 series Flowmaster at 2.5". I don't know if I need a crossover pipe or not or if the muffler has it already built into it. Saleen Speedstars would be nice too at 18x9. When I get on it at takeoff the engine makes a lot of sound (not noise and not bad sound) and the car kinda lumbers to get to speed but it does get there. The potential exists, just want to realize it.

ADDED: The car is bone stock except for a K&N panel filter, my hoodliner, and the 2 LINCOLN Motorsports decals I made for the back windows!

You should have received it by now, or did you go on that road trip?

These vehicles from the factory are pretty much detuned. The OBD II vehicles are the worst for this and really respond well to reprogramming. I just had another 95 base model here yesterday for some reprogramming and I installed my version of the Jmod for him and a trans cooler.
I know he’s on one of the Mark forums, I’ll have to ask him which one. If you feel the Jmod is not something you want to tackle I can provide you with a valve body with the mods already done to it. I supply complete kits through my business. I just don’t have them on the new website yet. So if you are interested you can give me a call 317 718-7231 or email me at lonnie@blueovalchips.com

TELL me MORE:D
The way I do it is each program is built to the customer's requests and or per our discussion of the vehicle's needs. Then once the program files are built I burn them into a chip or program them into the handheld programmer. This is why they are call custom programs. These are not ready made programs that most chip manufactures like Superchips, Jet, Hypertech or Diablo use that one program fits all. I’ve spent many hours on the dyno, at the track and then on the street over the past 10 years testing our programs to get the results I want. These performance programs can entail up to and more than two hundred changes to the factory programming depending on the year, type and modifications to the vehicle. These changes not only include engine parameters but also transmission and torque converter for automatic vehicles. Removal of speed limiter, increased shift rpm, shift firmness and torque converter lockups (auto) are standard changes in all our programming unless otherwise notified. You can expect better throttle responds, drivability, some increase in mileage besides additional performance.

Hey Lonnie it's Matt. I absolutely loved my chip when I got it. I had two programs installed one as firm as possible and the other slightly firmer than stock and both P93 tunes also I love that at anytime I can go back to factory setting meaning factory shifts and performance. Good for when the girls are asleep in the back and I dont want to break there necks lmao. But let me tell you this. Im a member of www.lincolnvscadillac.com and I have been back and forth more times than I can count on getting the J-Mod done. There was also another choice to make if I did decide to get it done and that was should I only put back one of the two 1-2 springs or put then both back. Well I was told by someone who didn't know what they was talking about that if you left out the bottom 1-2 spring that the shifts would be so hard even in normal driving that it would break stuff. So I put it off some more. Then I talked to Lonnie when I got my Tune and he was right it's not anything like what the guy said. It's totally driveable and FUN AS HE**... I am so glad that I got the J-Mod I thought I was happy enough with just the Chip Tuning untill yesterday when I bit the bullet. And what an explosion.. Full throttle shifts will put a smile on your face that wont go away untill long after you've parked your ride. Getting that 2nd gear tire squeal and a little side step of the back end just makes everything seem ooooooh soooooo right. But driving normal you'll get a nice little kick into 2nd and the 3rd shift is even easier and 4th is a walk in the park. So it's not nothing like what I heard. Its amazing. I've taken 3 people for a ride in it so far and they have all just smiled one said damn I wasn't expecting it to be such a beast. The other two both at the same time oh my god that was a rush. And just another side note. Lonnie is a great guy. I really wasn't expecting it because I've dealt with people when I was building up my Mustang "RIP". He's friendly, funny, listen's to what you say and best of all is an honest man. Oh and I've got positive comments on my banner already to. Looks good. I like that do they make one for my car. Dude that silver looks slick on a black car.

I know Lonnie gets busy and his internet isn't the best available out where he is. So I'll chime in for him. Yes he can. And it's a tremendous improvement after getting the custom tune and especially if you go all out and do the J-mod as well an absolute MUST if you ask me. Shifts are like day and night even with Tune.

Dunno why but for some reason I never got notified of Lonnie's response. I still haven't done anything but I really do want to get Lonnie's chip and most likely the J-Mod, then the exhaust and 3.73 gears. I did end up getting a Magnaflow X-Pipe which I'll get installed eventually whenever the exhaust gets done. Maybe even the 1-2 accumulator piston?

I'll get these things done, just don't know when! Soon I hope.

You'll want to get the chip AFTER the exhaust and gears are done.
