98 LSC intermittently on and off

My son's 98 lsc randomly turns on and off. It begins with various check messages like check headlamps, low fuel level, traction control and sometimes others. When traveling the instrument lights and engine will go on and off, but headlights will remain on and car will buck sometimes depending on how many seconds the engine is off when it begins to run again. When it does it at a redlight the car sometimes completely shuts off,but starts right back up.It usually does this at random times but several times in a row when it does.Ran a scan and no codes showed up.Car has 140,000 miles and runs good when it is not acting up. I am concerned about my son running into a safety issue and would appreciate any ideas you could share. Thanks,Scott

Bad battery, alternator or bad battery connection. I have been through this and all it was is that the positive power connection on the battery was not tight.

Thanks, connections seem good at battery but will clean and from what I can tell so far headlights are not effected, only dash lights and actual engine running.

I had this problem, all the accessories were taking a crap. radio, air ride, control center, and a few other things. battery was dead when I got to where I was going so that meant bad alt, and then bad battery too.
Check to see what your voltage is when running should be around 13.9 I think... if lower, then you what it is...

A bad battery can do all sorts of weird things in modern computer controlled cars. I had a car a few years ago that kept telling me that my left rear door was ajar... and it was only a two door! The battery was about 5 yrs old and as soon as it was replaced the problems went away.

I'd say go into a Sears auto center if you have one nearby, they'll test the battery and charging system for free.

I had a bad battery that would make the alt.act-up and send 16v to the syst. gave all sorts of probs. (never a charging syst. trouble code or info syst. alert) replaced batt. problems(killed 3 alts though) quit. I had the batt. tested at the local autozone they said it was fine. a friend has a snap-on digital tester it found the bad cell causing the alternator to go full field burning it out after a month or so. (these cars don't go far without a good batt or charging syst.!!!!!!!) occasionlly I would hit a bump in the road and my car would hic-up and flash door ajar or trunk open I thought it was an adjustment on the switches but that stopped when I replaced the battery and alt.

its gonna be battery,alt,cables..or a combination of the three.

the stock battery clamps are crap... I'd start there.
then the battery, then the alt.
in order of cheapest to most expensive..
