What all is needed to do a 99+ headswap into a gen2?
-heads
-intake
-valve covers (?)
-fuel rails
-headers

anything else?

isnt the 99+ a returnless fuel system? if so what could i do for reails? will 96-8 cobra ones fit with a 99+ intake?

RE: 99+ head swap

They flow better....straighter shot from the intake to head, so it flows a little bit better.

After speaking to some shops that do work on these heads though, it sounds like oyu'd be better off staying with the 93-98 heads and getting them worked.

RE: 99+ head swap

unless you know fo someone who will work them for free, a straight swap to something is what i am going to have to be doing...

RE: 99+ head swap

The gains from a stock headswap would not be very great. The heads on our cars are actually better when ported. With the amount of work involved in a head swap, it's totally not worth it if you're just putting on 99-up heads. Just get a 97-98 Cobra intake, and save up a few more bucks and have your heads ported.

RE: 99+ head swap

99+ heads ?? something I've been thinking about. But I'd rather just swap the whole 01 cobra engine. Even better 03 short block.

Dave, you rode in Lidio's car. 99+ heads will let you have that 10 psi of the line with the intercooled KB right now, without the wait for the b-style setup to come out.

RE: 99+ head swap

will 99+ heads even work with the intake manifold, or would you have to change manifolds as well. I think 99 heads might be good with Marks because they are know for giving a little more torque will sacrificing some max flow and hp numbers. But with a heavy Mark, torque numbers are more important than hp.

RE: 99+ head swap

With a stock or close to stock Mark VIII the gains would be fairly substantial, IMO. You would need to go to the 99+ Cobra intake as well.

RE: 99+ head swap

If anyone does a head swap; the new heads had better be ported, and have a valve job. If not you are an idiot and wasting a lot of time and money IMO.

RE: 99+ head swap

if your going to go na then build it up for that but if you want better heads for a blower or something then you can just buy a 04 maruader or mach motor and put pistons and rods in it with a kennebell.this will make a very nice setup.

RE: 99+ head swap

does the ortec supercharger kit come with all of the pipes and mounting plates. and would you need to get a cobra head for it to fit or does it come with one.

RE: 99+ head swap-PICS of a swap!

I justy did a head swap on a 95 mark VIII. of course, I swapped a set of stock heads on due to a high-mileage motor with a valve-spring problem. old heads-177k, broken #3 intake spring. new heads=60k miles on them, off my old motor.

Dave, the amount of work "needed" to do a head swap is not much more than the amount of work needed to "port" stock heads...motor out, old heads off, new heads on-OR-old heads back on, motor back in.

the intake comes off anyway, along with exhaust, etc. sending the old heads out for some valve work, or installing a set of new heads requires about the same amount of work.

oh, and from now on, the motor comes out with the K-member for me. I am a believer in this method. An hour after the car was racked, the front cover was coming off.

see some pics!
this shot, I removed the valve covers, and intake to have a looksie:

after seeing the problem(notice missing valve spring I removed):

and seeing all this:

I decided to do this:

an hour later, I had this:

then, I did this:

and finally this:

I needed to make this(Pony, you'll laugh):

thats about it. about 12 hours of cleaning, torquing, reading, head scrathing, pizza eating, dog kicking, smoke smoking, tool losing, prayer saying, and help seeking, me and a buddy were done.

Mechanical prowess? nah...my ability to operate basic hand-tools, read and follow basic instructions, and retain the visual memory of "what goes where" is all one needs.

Oh, and a nice fat air compressor, and about $100k worth of tools!

But, for the record...thanks JP.

and yes...that is a cam-lock tool. 2X 3/8 drive extensions, welded to angle-iron. saved us $240(Mc Guiver is alive and well)
