A couple things...

First off, the other day I was feeling a bit giddy and punched it to 95mph on the highway. Immediately after my power steering went out. After struggling to get home and leaving the car to sit a bit I checked to see if it was still bad, it was. Then on a whim I rev'd it up to about 5000 rpm and the steering came back on. It's been fine ever since except my steering wheel is no longer aligned properly. Is this something I should be worried about?

Second question is where is the best place to find a new oil pan? Should I just go hunting in the junk yard or is there a reasonably priced place for new oil pans? Mine is rusting and flaking off pretty badly.

While I've never had that symptom before. I would say:

1: Check fluid levels. If OK,
2: Bleed system. If Bled,
3: Suspect bad pump.

Surely the pulley could not be loose? You'd hear it.

"should I worry about this" ... lol do you really need to ask?

I'd check out what Bill is telling you... it seems like the PS system on the older marks is starting to go out now...

Well I figured i'd ask since it's working perfect now. The power steering pump was replaced just this past January so I assumed that should be good if anything. Fluid level is fine as well. My teacher told me these cars have alot of rack problems, I tried to do some searching here but didn't find anything close to the problem I had. I'll try bleeding it sometime this week hopefully.

Anyone on the oil pan question?

Currently watching the only one on ebay. I'm normally very careful on there since I got burned for $800.

These cars dont have any more "rack problems" than any other car.
hell.. it uses the same mustang II/Pinto rack design that ford has used for many years.

IMHO "the teacher aint as bright as he would lead you to think".

The users here on this board probably have 100 times the knowledge in regards to Mark 8's than your teacher does.

I'd trust the Mark 8 experts...

I heard a "expert in the auto industry" say to stay away from the mark 8's because the "ABS" system fails very often and it's very expensive to repair.
Usually ABS problems are solved by a very cheap and easy to install "WHEEL SENSOR".

The "expert" had "heard about air ride problems" and called it the ABS system.

He didn't even know "what part of the car he was talking about".. but that didn't stop him from "TALKING".

Well the teacher in question is a certified master mechanic blah blah blah 30 some years in the business but he worked for GM most of that time so I only trust him for general problems. Just figured i'd ask here before doing anything since if it was a common problem like he said, someone here would know about it.

Some teachers are very good, others simply hide behind ASE certifications.

The good ones never mention their certifications....nor their "years of experience".
The good ones dont have to..

mopar68gtx on ebay is a very reliable seller! I got mine from this seller.
(LOD member? I.D.K.)

mopargtx isn't a member if I remember right, but he is a family member of a trusted and well respected member of this site.

and.. with that said, I have purchased numerous items from mopar68gtx.
I bought stuff from him 5 years ago, and as recently as two months ago.

...never had a problem with his prices or the parts condition.

He had to mention it in the beginning of the class as part of the introduction thing. He is a very good teacher though, very funny guy and he makes it fun. I've heard stories of master techs being booksmart but they barely ever touched a vehicle.

The oil pan i'm watching is from nitrousd46. I'll look up mopar68gtx though he might have a few other things I need.

to clarify your original point.

No these cars DO NOT have a lot of PS problems. The mark VIII has a very solid PS system... rack problems are very rare even in cars that never get the system serviced.

You did mention that some kind of aftermarket part was used... those on the other hand tend to be of much inferior quality than OEM parts... and that is a fact. Sadly OEM parts often times cost 4-10x more than the aftermarket replacement.

I would be more concerned about the steering wheel being off center! its supposed to be a mechanical connection. can the pinion jump a tooth on the rack?
