A little strange..........

My Mark normally has the headlights on at all times...

This morning, I got in and immediately got a message warning to check exterior lamps --- and they were both unlit. However, when I actually turned the switch - they lit fine, same with the brites. But they dont come on unless I turn the switch. Ideas????

RE: A little strange..........

there may be a seperate fuse for the daytime running lamps. I'd start by checking the owners manual.

RE: A little strange..........

Checked everything. EVERY fuse I have, even the high voltage fuses. No Good.

They work fine normally, they just dont come on "automatically". They used to be on ALL the time. Now only when I actually turn them on. Its a big deal for me cuz I will perpetually leave them on --- and end up with endless jumpstarts. :)

RE: A little strange..........

Was you foot on the brake when you started the car? Did you check the brake lights?

RE: A little strange..........

Havent checked the brake lights yet, but will later when I ahve someone to stand behind......... Everything else seems to be fine...horn, panel lights, etc.

Why would it be a factor to have my foot on the brakes when i started the car??

RE: A little strange..........

Because the brakes lights would be on with you foot on the pedel, if they did not light, then you could get a warning message. Not sure if the bulbs have 2 filaments or not. Just somthing to check out.

RE: A little strange..........

Havent checed the brake lights, but regardless, the headlights do not light automatically, thats my problem.

RE: A little strange..........

ok, i re-read the post, do you mean the daytime running lamps?

RE: A little strange..........

yes, used to be that whenever the car was running, the lights were on. Now I have to turn them on manually

RE: A little strange..........

You don't have the your of your Mark in your profile, but the 97 repair CD has a diagnostic routine on it, to much info to cut and past.

RE: A little strange..........

I assume this is a Canadian bought car but if not, it could be that the sensor had been bad all along (telling the lights to come on) and the failure mode has now changed. (from always on to never on)

Left turn signal front blinks very fast --- rear brake / turn lamp is out.

So how do I change the left rear brake lamp?

RE: NEW DEVELOPMENT

RE: NEW DEVELOPMENT

You have to push out the lamp from inside the trunk......Undo fasteners (three?) push out tail lamp, change bulb, reverse procedure.

OK -- Changed the tail lamp.

Headlights still screwed up though. Come on fine manually, but do not come on automatically like they should -- the delayed off feature doesnt work either

RE: NEW DEVELOPMENT

Ok this is just a shot in the dark.
Canadian running lights are on if the ignition switch is on “unless” the parking brake is engaged.

Could the parking brake be partially engaged or a malfunctioning switch on the parking brake?

RE: A little strange..........

Am I missing something? I have a 97 mark and I don't seem to have daytime running lights. The lights come on fine in the auto mode and when I turn them on manually, but no daytime running. Also do the interior lights have a separate sensor to tell them to come on and go off? because I noticed that sometimes during the moring and early eve my headlights will be on, but the interior lights will not be and then as it gets darker the interior lights will pop on.

Unless your covering up the sensor eye on the dash, you probably have a failed module for the automatic lights..

Auction time (if you know where I mean, you can find one quickly)

RE: A little strange..........

I believe mine is a canadian model, which leaves headlights on ALL the time. Cant turn them off....Except, now they're off unless I manually turn them on, which is my problem

RE: A little strange..........

Yes, only Canadian models have the daytime running lights. On a 2nd gen the dash lights are controlled and come automatically on via the photo sensor. Not sure about 1st gens
