Adding Homelink option

Hi, Anyone had experience adding the Homelink garage door opener option to a 98' Mark 8? I've seen them in junkyards and thought it might be easy to add it. Is there any more parts then what's inside the sunvisor? Does the Homelink get it's power from the wire leading to the mirror light or is it seperately powered? Any info or comments appreciated.

RE: Adding Homelink option

If it helps, according to the '96 manual...

Note:
The universal transmitter is not serviceable. If it has been determined to be inoperative, the entire inside visor (04100) must be replaced.

...shares Circuit 54 (LG/Y) with visor mirror lamps.

...is electrically connected to electronic door lock control processor's battery saver feature.

...battery saver times out illumination and some accessory functions 45 minutes after last input to electronic door lock control processor (14B001).

...A non-volatile random access memory (NVRAM) keeps program stored even when the vehicle battery is disconnected, or the fuse or visor is removed.

Unfortunately, the homelink universal transmitter didn't come on the '93s and my aquamarine interior is a '93 interior color only, or I'd be junkyard shoppin'. ;)

RE: Adding Homelink option

I have added a Homelink to my '98. You do not need any additional parts and yes power comes from mirror circuit. The hard part is removing the fabric from the visor in a way that it does not get torn. The fabric is held in place by plastic teeth around the perimeter of the visor, slightly separate the visor where it comes together you do not open it much just enough to remove the fabric and only remove the mirror side. I removed the vanity light that gives good access for the wiring and the removal of the plastic blank that must be removed to except the homlink transmitter. When you remove the Homelink from the donor visor you can practice removing it without tearing to visor fabric.

So wait a minute... are you saying the models NOT equipped with the homelink transmitter have a plastic BLANK in the visor for accepting the transmitter?

RE: Adding Homelink option

My '98 had a blank that you had to remove, the transmitter snaps in it perfectly. I can send pic's to your email address it you like.

RE: Adding Homelink option

Please do! I'm wondering if the transmitter could somehow be grafted onto a Gen1. :)

RE: Adding Homelink option

Heehee... I just scored a 'blue' visor with the homelink option off an '02 Grand Marquis on eBay. Looks like I have another project to find time for. ;)

RE: Adding Homelink option

Which homelink is the rolling code one ? The one with red or green LED ?

My 95 used to have it, but it wouldn't work with my new garage opener.

RE: Adding Homelink option

Red.

My 97 had the link, I thought all Marks 97+ had them.

Wait, yours should still work, how did you try to program it? I think programming instructions might be different, thats all.

Nope, I tried every possible way and it wouldn't work. Then I sold the car ...

It was an option on 97s, mine doesn't have it.

RE: Adding Homelink option

My Homelink came from a 2001 Lincoln LS and it has the red light. It works with my rolling code garage door opener.
