Whenever Im in my car driving, idling wahtever, all I smell is gas. I get out and walk around the car and all I smell is gas. Its not comming from the exhaust or anything, that seems to be alright, not too rich. I dont ever see any puddles or anything, but maybe Im not looking hard enough. Anyone have any Ideas where this is comming from??

Mods: If you find a better place for this, please feel free to move it. I wasn't sure exactly waht category this would fall under

RE: All I smell is Gas!

I have the same problem on my '93. I think my problem is the fuel filler line to the tank. Check under the car when you fuel it up and let the nozzle click off automatically. You will have a nice puddle under the car if that's the problem. Don't do any burn outs out of the station though...

RE: All I smell is Gas!

Could be the evaporative canister is worn out, or possibly damaged from topping off the tank. Or there's a few other valves associated with the evap system that could be bad and allowing gas vapors into the passenger compartment.

The o-ring in the seal for the filter line was the original problem, I found it and made the dealership replace it, which they "supposedly" did (If you know how the dealer opeated, you will understand my concerns. Where is all of this evap equipment located?? What is the fix for this?

RE: All I smell is Gas!

The evaporative stuff is located around the car. I looked last night at my '98 service manual on CD, and it wasn't very specific with locations. There was the canister and one valve that appeared to be located right near the gas tank, then two more valves closer to the front of the car. Hard for me to explain. I'll try to take a screenshot tonight and post it.

RE: All I smell is Gas!

Thanks, that would be very helpful and appreciated. However when I got to work this afternoon, i put a large drip pan under the front of the car and guess what? 4 hours later when I got out, the pan was covered in gas, interesting huh. I seriously have never, EVER had this many problems with a dealership. I going right to the service mangager when I go in tomorrow, im not even going to bother with the schelepas at the desk. I refuse to pay twice for work they didnt do the first time. Does anyone know the next few people in line I can go talk to in order to get the right service. I dont care if I have to go to Ford's regional representative or whatever, I have never been treated more poorly in my life. I want to go right up the chain of command untill either my car gets fixed right or something bad happens to that dealership. After I get this squared away, I will be posting a formal review on this dealership and all of the terrible things that they did to my car. Thank you everyone for helping me get through this.

Well, sounds like you found your problem. But in case you or anyone else was wondering, this is what the evap system is on a '98 (I imagine it'd be similar for all years, but you know how the "little things" tend to change over the years):

I've found those location pics to be only marginally accurate. It gives you the general location only.

RE: All I smell is Gas!

My fears have been confirmed. I pulled the inner fender well, and guess what? Thats right, they never even removed the clips on the fuel filter seal, meaning that they never changed the filter. My Genuine AutoZone Purolator filter was still in there with the original clips.

I called the dealership and taked to the General Manager. He told me how embarassed that he was and a whole bunch of other BS. He then told me that a car carrier would be at my house first thing in the morning to brong the car in to be fixed, completely on the house. I told him, first of all, you will never, EVER see my car again. I am not allowing your service department to even think about working on my car. The guy said 'on the house' like he was doing me some sort of favor. NO! You would be doing the work that I already paid you for and that you documented as being done. This is called Fraud and negligence. He didnt seem to understand. I then called the OWNER. I told him the situcation and he told me that he had 'heard of it.' I told him I wanted, at bare minimum, my money back. He told me he would see what he could do. HE IS THE OWNER. What does he have to go ask his wife? Seriously. I also have calls into the BBB and the Atorney Generals office of consumer protection. I think they will come around.

Anyways, the point: Once I get my money back, I am going to just do the repair myself. I want to replace the whole rubber tube on the end of the fuel line. That way I get the seat and seal installed properly and no messing around. What am i going to need to do this? Has anyone done this before? My uncle is a mechanic, so worse case scenario, I throw some cash his way and get him to help if I need it. But what kind of project am I looking at? Anyone with any advice I'd love to hear it, thanks.
